TPD: Suspect shot after fighting with officer, trying to drown police K9 dies

TAMPA -- A suspect shot this morning after Tampa police said he attempted to drown an officer and a police K-9 has died of his injuries. Kobvey Igbuhay, 18, died at the hospital where he was taken after being shot during the altercation with an officer.

Police said the altercation occurred after four suspects in a stolen car fled into a swampy area to elude police.

Two other teens police said were in the stolen car and taken into custody were identified as Dominic Robles, 18, and Shakira Rodriguez, 18. Rodriguez was apprehended after hiding in the woods for more than three hours. Police said the fourth teen in the car is a 16-year-old juvenile who is not being identified at this time. Charges are pending for all three suspects. Officials say the incident started at 2:30 a.m. when a police officer spotted a stolen SUV near Nebraska and Lake avenues. Four people were inside the SUV. The officer briefly pursued the SUV, officials say, and then called a police helicopter, which followed the SUV from the air.

The SUV traveled north and stopped behind the First Presbyterian Church of Tampa, located at 4307 Humphrey St., and the suspects got out of the SUV and ran into a wooded area with deep, swampy water.

Two of the suspects were quickly taken into custody, and police followed the other suspects into the woods with K-9 police dogs. Officials say one of the suspects tried to drown a police dog and fight with an officer, who defended himself by shooting the suspect.

The suspect was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he later died.

Dozens of officers established a perimeter around the wooded area, and a police helicopter circled the area, tracking the fourth suspect with night vision. The suspect refused to come out, but was eventually apprehended at about 6:25 a.m.

The officer and the police dog are being checked out. Officials say they did not suffer serious injuries.

Igbuhay's Father, Harvey Igbuhey, and family have questions. They don’t believe the 18 year old was trying to hurt anyone. They believe he was scared, trying to get away.

"I want to see why would he shoot my son in the head,” he said. “You could have shot him somewhere else. You don’t want him to live no more? For what? I don’t get it.”

The officer, a 15-year veteran, said he fired in self-defense. He’s on paid administrative leave, standard for any officer-involved shooting.

Just a misunderstood little boy that stole a car tried to kill a police dog and attacked and fought wit a police officer. I certainly wouldn't want him to live longer to advance to what rape and murder? I say well done officer, turds should be flushed, not understood.

“So the 15 year veteran felt that his only choice was to shoot the perp in the head?”

The Walking Dead just started a new season.

Not unless his head just happened to be the best shot at the time.

True. But if you check the official story is that the suspect was trying to drown both a police dog and a police officer.

Tampa, FL - UPDATE: The suspect who was shot early this morning after fighting with a Tampa Police officer and attempting to drown a Police K-9 and an officer has died of his injuries.

That's pretty ambitious to try to drown a dog and a police officer while also trying to escape from them.

If the police are supposed to carry out summary executions then you won’t mind if they do this to you or yours, right? I mean if the police shoot you then you MUST have had it coming, right?

Seriously, I’m not saying the police got it wrong, but I am saying that the details of their story would be suspicious by police standards if that same story was told TO them instead of BY them.

Looks like an odd case of grammar, since it looks like only the suspect died (and nobody else).

Summary executions? I think you should pack up your hyperbole and quit your friggin cop hating game. Anytime someone says anything reasonable about eliminating animals you rear your skunk and spray. You can respond all you want I have no reason to care.

Your post #23 certainly didn’t promote due process so if you were not celebrating summary executions then what, pray tell, were you celebrating?

Unfortunately Obama is going to bring in more of these types of folks to equally distribute the fear and brutality among all communities.

Not nearly enough info to make such an inflammatory claim.

Third perp killed today, one armed robber in DC shot it out with police and lost; one in Frederick, Md. tried to kill a cop with a stolen car and got shot-dead.

Why two names for Kobvey? Is his Turkish? Dindu Nuffin sounds like a name out of The Hobbit movies. Did he have large feet?

His new name is “Dead Swamp Thing”.

No offense, but it’s usually police officers who get shot in the head. Check Google and you’ll see there are almost no stories at all about police shooting someone in the head. It’s a weird detail is all and it’s worth a second thought.
