Half of Food Workers Admit to Working While Sick, According to Survey

The thought of someone with a cold handling your food may turn your stomach, but according to a new survey, many food workers say taking time from work when they’re not feeling well just isn't possible.

According to a new poll commissioned by Alchemy, a firm that works with companies across the food chain to improve safety and productivity, 51 percent of food workers (including people who grow, process, cook, and serve it) say they “always” or “frequently” go to work when they’re feeling ill. Thirty-eight percent said they “sometimes” go to work sick.

The statistic raises concerns for public health. According to NPR’s The Salt, the “vast majority of reported cases of norovirus — the leading cause of foodborne disease outbreaks and illnesses across the country — have been linked to infected food industry workers.”

Does ANYBODY really think they would not work if they’re only slightly sick? They’d miss income. The restaurant would be shorthanded and service would suffer. It’s a silly concept. Don’t sneeze into that pot of potatoes and everything will be fine.

And the infantilization of the USA continues apace.

Yes people, most fast-food and service jobs don't have sick days.

Call in sick and it's tantamount to quitting for many jobs.

This is why food, since the time of cave men, is heated up before it is eaten. It kills viruses, worms, bacteria, etc.

Not that I blame them. Food service wages suck, to be honest. At least in this area, a waitress makes anywhere from $1.50 to $3.00 per hour and expects tips to make up for the dismal wage. Cooks may make $10 to $12 an hour.

Pretty much, I think you’d find that half of **ALL** workers will admit to going to work sick. Especially as it’s easy to replace people with this “roaring” economy our Feckless Leader has inflicted on America. . .

How many admit to not working while not sick?

I’d bet half or more of all workers admit to going to work sick. It’s just the way it is. For some, staying home means no pay. For others, staying home means just that much more on your desk tomorrow.

The older I get, the less I want to eat out for a lot of reasons, not just this one. I have walked out of a restaurant after being seated, when I could hear the cook hacking & coughing in the kitchen.

Sounds like some should invent a very sensitive portable virus detector that you should carry around when you choose to eat out.
I avoid McDonald because I think the HELP does not like my color attitude.

Doctors and Nurses go to work sick, grocery store employees, teachers and students, bus drivers, airline stewards, cashiers who handle the money you handle before you scratch your face, wipe your nose, eat your food, drink your drink, go to work sick.

And people always will if they can, because even if they have sick days they will either save them to cash them in if they can or use them for something oh so much more important like vacation, or Disneyland or a concert than stay home and get well.

Gamma ray treatment for food is quite effective!

Just don’t make people who eat that food angry, you wouldn’t like it.

Heated up,yes...but what about sushi? I saw the grocery store sushi dude sneezing all over his gloved hands (point of the gloves?) While continuing to touch fish and reach into the rice bucket. I ran to the manager. Lord only knows much food was tossed that day.

That explains the flu I got after being at a Subway restaurant in 2004. Threw my thyroid out of whack. I had not had the flu since I was a kid.

One time back in the 90’s while at a AM/PM gas station there was a women clerk who was putting out the condiments for the hot dogs. She had a cold and was using a kleenix. She had no gloves. I have never ain’t anything since at a gas station.

Yep. This is reason 759 not to eat out, but instead prepare and eat your own delicious, healthy, nutritious, and value-priced food home-cooked meals. Tomorrow, I’m going to cherry-wood smoke and slow cook three racks of ribs I just bought at Costco. Yum!

Hell, I get 14 paid sick/personal days and I never take them.

Maybe 3 or 4 a year if I’m really sick.

I sure as hell don’t worry about infecting anyone else. HAve these people grown up isolated or what?

And even if one sneezes, so what?
