It's mainly a cultural thing, especially for Hispanics and Blacks. Along with numerous tattoos, black SUV's with equally black tinting, a big fierce dog is a status symbol meant to intimidate.
A couple of weeks ago I was on a commuter train (populated mainly with Blacks) in Saint Louis with a friend when an old white man came on with a service dog (mixed breed, not a lab) with a vest marked "service dog." I believe he had vision problems. The train was crowded and he sat up front in an area for seniors with the dog by his side. It was instructive for us to watch Blacks get on and see the dog. Most instantly froze before moving past slowly keeping an eye on it. One over-weight Black girl was petrified with fear and positively refused to pass the dog. Her girl friend finally had to go back up the aisle and grab her hand and pull her by the dog back to a seat. It was both amusing and somewhat enlightening to see that culture in action.
Pit bulls are ticking time bombs. I have no time for people who deny this reality. Such a shame.
The 5 million that do nothing but act as loving pets for their whole life do not matter.
I will NEVER understand the people who simply do not get this. When do we read about people being mauled by Corgies, Dachsunds, Beagles, Bassett Hounds, Labs, Cocker Spaniels, Poodles, German Short Haired Pointers, and so on? Seriously.

Yes, so many are part pit part something else. The Sunday newspapers are filled with them up for adoption. I don’t think they’re pretty or a cute breed at all.

Hadn’t thought of it that way. Usually it’s just the insecure types. Now you’ve got me thinking about how muslims (won’t capitalize it) deal with dogs. Barky has one (for show), but I don’t think they’re too crazy about them, either.
The possibility they were chained is more likely given this report of a previous incident....
“The dogs allegedly dug a hole below the fence in place and made puncture wounds in the victims’ skin, but the injuries did not meet the criteria under Texas law to deem the dogs dangerous, cops said.
The dogs’ owner paid the injured parties’ medical bills and appropriately restrained his dogs after the incident, police said.”

Looks a lot like our dog :-). Gentle and sweet, but not much of a guard dog.
Because kanawa has a valid point is one of the reasons I am opposed to breed banning. Kanawa is right that most of the time, in the hands of owners who respect the breed (even though they may not think of it that way), they're loving pets and that's putting it mildly; these dogs can successfully defend to the death their masters against big opposition, whereas a Chihuahua will have the heart to do the same, but ... end up a snack.
Banning breeds is a bad way to go because it would be a slippery slope. There must be other ways to handle the problem. Making ownership of the breed illegal is a lousy way. The right to discriminate against owners based on types or breed of dog is a good way to handle it.
Wow. That observation was very telling! Well stated.
This breed is known to be unstable, so much so it is a well-deserved stereotype that is now just common sense, especially around small children. The owner’s motto for these dogs are “They are such good dogs, they’ve never killed a person before.”
Post 30 confirms they had a history of attacking others, btw.

Owners should be held directly responsible for the actions of their dogs and accept all liability for injuries, attacks and even death of other beings at the actions of their pets.
Parents should know full well that these dogs are never to be trusted around children, period. To expose children to these animals is to put them in unnecessary danger to serious injury and even death.
I know a young lady who has a pit.
She’s very bright, masters in EE from MIT.
I cannot explain why she has such a dangerous animal!?
I think the entire breed should be expunged.
