First things first. Im not in any way condoning the act of mediaeval barbarity that the Saudi authorities are reportedly planning to inflict on Karl Andree, a 74-year-old British citizen. Its savagery dressed up as justice, plain and simple.
And yet. We have to be realistic about this case, and about our dealings with Saudi Arabia. Bluntly, 350 lashes for a British grandfather is the cost of doing business with the Saudis.

Play dice with the devil don’t be surprised if you get burned.
What did he allegedly do?.................
So you want to defend yourself from a pointed stick ey?
A POINTED STICK?!!!:-)
The Sharia law police found some bottles of home-made wine in the trunk of his car. The judge sentenced him to a year in jail (he’s already served 14 months) and 350 lashes.
That being the case why not offer 350 Brits who agree with that to take one lash each in his place?
I have known four different people who worked in Saudi and many who have traveled there. Those who lived in compounds have always said alcohol is not an issue.........IN THE COMPOUND.
I feel horrible for this man and this likely will kill him. Somehow though there must be more behind the scenes then we know about.
OK. I read the article.
What did the old guy do?
I suspected as much. Okay, even I know that’s a huge no-no in The Kingdom of Saud..............................
Yeah, I missed it too!
Yet if he was caught with a naked 12 year old boy in the trunk, he would have been OK.
We should have dropped the Saudis as our first move following 9/11. Instead, Bush literally held hands with them.
I read the article and still didn’t know.....................however I suspected it had something to do with alcohol................
Since we are no longer beholden to them for our petroleum needs, why do we still put up with their crap?.......................
He is not going to get the lashes. Everyone know it will kill him. The saudis will make more threats for internal consumption then send him home.
You are correct. By not directly identifying the saudi tie to 911, it made a sham out of the response we did make
zactly.....Im an old ME hand from the early 70s. If ya cant take the heat get out of the kitchen. The ME is no place for amateurs. Even seasoned hands need to tread carefully.
What’s ironic is most of the wealthy Saudi’s, related to the royal family, have large well stocked bars in their homes. They keep them behind a curtain ,tapestry, or hidden doors.
I know this because a relative of mine did business with them. He said they’d laugh at the hypocrisy.
Why is this antiquated religion even allowed to exist in any form in America? To hell with the “freedom of religion” that protects Islam; Islam is no more a religion than cannibalism or slavery is. Giving a set of savage beliefs a capital letter shouldn’t grant it equal protection.
If you look at history and our policy, it looks like the Saudis have played an active role in it since the Oil Embargo back in the 70’s. We’ve apparently been a quasi puppet of their’s since then just to ensure the oil flows without interruption.
