Students React to Possibility of Allowing Guns on Campus

The heinous violence that unraveled at a community college in Oregon last week is fresh on students' minds at Miami Dade College.

Students are more uneasy to learn lawmakers in Tallahassee are considering a bill to allow guns on Florida school campuses.

"It makes me anxious and unsafe to know anybody could be carrying a gun. We're all human and capable of having a bad day," said Shaloma Gutierrez, MDC student.

"I feel it'd be more provocative for violence. I don't agree and I hope it changes and it just doesn't pass," said Sydne Garcia, MDC student.

Those students mirror how most people feel. A statewide poll released by the University of South Florida says more than 7 out of 10 Floridians want to continue the concealed weapons ban on college campuses.

The president of MDC released this statement: "The bottom line is allowing people with concealed-weapons licenses to carry guns on college and university campuses would only endanger them. This is a risk and cost that we cannot afford."

Still, state and house committees have voted to support the bill. The grassroots organization "Students for Concealed Carry" argue gunmen who target college campuses could be stopped if students and staff are allowed to be armed. But those attending MDC's Wolfson Campus disagree.

"There have been some incidents where people feel threatened but I don't believe that we should go as far as permitting guns on grounds because that will promote more violence," said Thomas Thielen, MDC student.

Another similar but separate bill is also gaining attention in the House, that would allow people with concealed weapons permits to openly carry guns. The next set of hearings on that bill haven't been scheduled.

However, the students’fears have not been the norm at college campuses. Its a lib scam, like shootouts at every fender bender like libs claimed in every state concealed passed in. Fear is a lib tool.

A sudden stampede TOWARD the shooter when a threat is raised is VERY good at discouraging attempts at a mass murder by one or a few gunmen, as it discombobulates them badly, and their own panic allows them to be overpowered.

It worked very well for buffalo herds.

"It makes me anxious and unsafe to know anybody could be carrying a gun.

What the student really meant to say was, "It makes me less anxious knowing only criminals will be carrying guns."

Same thing happened on the campus where I work. Hilarity ensued: liberal hysteria (including offers of anxiety counseling), deep concern in the student newspapers, petitions, staff and faculty briefings, official university letters, and then it actually went through. That was over a year ago now. Total incidents so far: 0. No bloodbaths. No shootouts. No Wild West. No nothing.

Which should be no surprise. It's exactly the same law they're under if they set a foot off campus.

********************************************************************

If these numbers are to be believed (Big if). 70% of Floridians are hopelessly stupid.

You already did not know who may or may not be carrying. Also I have carried for several decades and I have had a heck of a lot of bad days but I never shot anyone..........

“THE RIGHT OF A PEOPLE TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. Who fought the Battles, of Lexington, Bunker Hill and Saratoga?
...Who saved Baltimore? ... Who obtained the victory at New Orleans?
These militia, trained and disciplined in their own houses; not practised in the field, but BRINGING THEIR GUNS WHICH THEY WERE TAUGHT TO USE WHEN CHILDREN..” p.111, p.168 are sourced from “Proceedings and Debates of the Convention of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania,” Vol. 4, by the Pennsylvania Constitutional Convention, 1837-8

What documented fact do you have to back up that supposition?

Right keep it the way it is now, Shaloma ... only the criminals carry guns on your campus. Are you really that dumb or just afraid of every thing in life?

Now that the news is out how un protected your campus is, don’t be surprised if your school is next.

No, the state legislature made licensed concealed carry apply on campus, which it didn't before that. The carrying-on is pretty silly in retrospect. Ever hear the phrase "an elephant screeching giving birth to a gnat"? It was like that.

Wow. When I was in High School, we had a precious hour or so between the time school let out and we had to be home for chores and homework and supper.

Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE had a rifle or shotgun in their truck, along with other hunting and fishing gear depending upon the season.

It never EVER occurred to ANY of us to bring a weapon if there were a fight of any kind after school. THAT was considered cheating!

I pity the kids that are coming of age today. As a Nation, We. Are. Doomed.

Somebody once explained to me that the fear of standing on the edge of a cliff is not that you will fall, but that you will jump. It seemed irrational to me, but maybe people have some deep seated fear of their impulses. In any event, the fear that these students have of the possibility that their fellow students would be armed is of the same kind, the fear that if they had a gun, they would pull it out and use it willy-nilly. The people who founded this country, and who built it, and traipsed across it to settle it, had to carry guns to defend themselves from all kinds of threats, and did not have such a fear. We have been programmed to become progressively more feminized and fearful of all kinds of things that rational people would face head on.
