Clinton e-mails were vulnerable to hackers, tech firm warned
Washington Post ^

A technology subcontractor that has worked on Hillary Rodham Clinton’s e-mail setup expressed concerns over the summer that the system was inadequately protected and vulnerable to hackers, a company official said Wednesday.

But the concerns were rebuffed by the company managing the Clinton account, Platte River Networks, which said it had been instructed by the FBI not to make changes. The FBI has been reviewing the security of the e-mail system.

The subcontractor, Datto, which specializes in backing up data, had not been aware that it was handling Clinton e-mails until media reports in August noted Platte River Networks’ involvement with the controversy surrounding the former secretary of state’s e-mails.

Datto officials, worried about the “sensitive high profile nature of the data,” then recommended upgrading security by adding sophisticated encryption technology to its backup systems, said the Datto official, who requested anonymity to discuss an issue involving a client.

The Datto official said there is no evidence the company’s systems had been attacked.

To even entertain the notion that anyone could think legitimately classified information (i.e., Top Secret) was protected is patently absurd. Internet security from hacking, etc. with respect to security and vulnerability is one thing. It is an entirely different thing with respect to classified information transmittal and encryption protection.

It is the equivalent of saying a VW Beetle and a Lamborghini are the same because both have 4 wheels.

Hillary’s not worried about US ntl security being compromised. The Clintons are worried sick b/c Obama is obsessed w/ getting his hands on the Clinton servers......and may be using foreign proxies.

The Clinton servers contain secret details of all the Clinton’s wealth, their holdings, their offshore numbered accounts, safe deposit boxes....and all the income from their lucrative arms deals, US uranium mines, gold mining, oil reserves, etc etc etc.

Obama feels shortchanged by the conniving Clintons. He was supposed to get a cut of everything......but he’s been reading about deals he never knew existed.

Getting ahold of the Clinton servers is Obama’s mi$$ion or else the peevish Michele might get physical.

The FBI has been reviewing the security of the e-mail system.
So how is it that the FBI is leading the investigation into Hillary's emails?

Here is the part I don't understand...

The Clinton apologists and even Judge Walton are making a distinction between personal and business email. I thought I remember in training about such things that once a classified document hits a computer/server the classification status of that piece of equipment automatically rises to the level of the most sensitive document. At that point what you thought was yours, isn't yours anymore.

If that is the case, why are we even having this discussion?

AS FREEPER SERKIT POSTED: Attention investigators:

<><> Who transported Hillary’s server from NY to NJ? Did the Secret Service (who Hillary insists had been guarding it since it was really Bill’s Library/Foundation asset) accompany and supervise the transport of the server?

<><> Per the interview with Platte River Networks, did they just take it, lock it up, not power it up, connect it to the internet, or not have it functioning as an active email server?

<><> Was there continuity of server activity between May 2013 to August 2015, or did the server go off-line starting in June 2013?

<><> Who received actual server in NJ - the name of the Platte River Networks employee/technician? What WAS it - make/model/form factor, etc.?

<><> Did the Clinton Foundation (or issuer of the RFP on Hillary’s behalf) indicate that the company that would provide data services qualified to handle national-security-level data?

<><> In various interviews and reports, Platte River Networks repeatedly stated they were to “upgrade, manage, and secure” the server. What - specifically - does that mean?

<><> What did Hillary’s RFP/contract order the data center to do specifically?

<><> Does Platte River Networks have sufficient security clearance to handle this type of contract?

<><> What were the firewall protocols in place at the time?

<><> Who - by name - had access to the server, and the administrative authorization to wipe and cleanse the server? When was that done?

<><> Does “upgrade, manage, and secure” the server mean that they PRN was given the task to remove all data from the server when it received it in June 2013?

<><> Was malware or antivirus also on the server?

<><> Was the inherent firewall, virus protection, or operating system “upgraded, managed, and secured”?

<><> Any incidents reported such as DOS attack, hacking, etc.? What were they? How were they resolved?

<><> Other than arranging for the server to be moved from NY to NJ, what was the Denver company contracted to do in relation to maintaining the server?

<><> What tangible evidence is there that the server arrived in functioning condition, was being used as an email server, was “upgraded, managed, and secured”, then wiped just prior to seizure by the FBI?

<><> Were normal and regular backup procedures executed on the server, and where would the back ups be kept?

<><> If no backups were taken, was there a disaster recovery location?

<><> Where was that? If no backups and no disaster recovery, what was the plan if the equipment failed or found to have been wiped of any functionality?

<><> Were any foreign nationals employed at Platte River Networks, or at Datto, that had access to the Clinton server?

In the Dept of Defense, any contractor (example: Lockheed to name one of the biggest) must use stringent safeguards to insure that any computer, server, network etc. that contains or transmits classified information has an adequate level of protection, which is reviewed and periodically inspected by DOd.

I’m certain the State dept. has the same requriements

The contractors that had hillary’s servers did not meet the required standards as far as i know. This is a major violation.

Who knows? They probably dumped it off on them as if that name means anything any more.

The crux of it is the concept of an open internet email system being any level of secure from a standpoint of being legitimate for transmittal of classified information is not something that should be entertained on its face at all.

IF then the FBI is involved, it should be under the assumption a criminal act(s) has/have occurred in ALLOWING porting of classified information to an open internet system. It has no bearing otherwise except to survey the damage done. The STANDARD assumption would be NOT IF a hack occurred, but when and by whom and how many organizations.

If it were you or I that had allowed classified (de-marked, BTW) information to flow through our email accounts, the FBI wouldn’t be “investigating the e-mail system’s security”. They would be “investigating” how many crimes you and me would be charged with.

THIS HAS CRIMINAL IMPLICATIONS A cabinet-level government employee using their own server and personal e-mail exclusively is unheard of.

<><> the US govt tech system is really fussy——particularly about emails from the US State Dept.

<><> a govt official (particularly the Secy of State) cannot simply buy a brand new computer with licenses and programs and expect to have it certified.

<><> US govt officials are required to have a government-purchased computer, set up by the govt, utilizing a CACC card cleared technician.

<><> a high government official (particularly the Secy of State) to utilize day to day a non-government computer for communications in the performance of their job is in violation of security laws in dozens of ways.

<><> whether marked as such, all emails emanating from Hillary’s private server are classified ntl security data.

It is considered a crime for ex-govt employees to possess ntl security emails. All ntl security material belongs to the American people and is to be turned over upon termination of employment.

Ntl security info transferred from the State Dept and stored in The Clinton Foundation server is an atrocity.

Government contractors doing work for the government are governed by NISPOM - National Information Security Program Objective Memorandum - guidelines for handling and securing classified information and is managed/overseen by the Defense Security Service. Official agencies of the government are not, and have their own guidelines, and in my experience are sometimes more lax in their stewardship.

But they all have one thing in common - networks set up specifically to handle classified information (e.g., SIPRNET or others for higher level classifications). These are NOT open internetbased email systems without a physical layer hardware encryption.

Hillary’s contractors were most likely (I’d say definitely) not even cleared to handle or transmit classified information - they probably never heard of NISPOM or DSS.

What has happened here is a serious breach of Federal Law committed through grossly negligent behavior or by outright criminal intent by an employee (or former employee) of the US Government.

They don’t need to “investigate” e-mail security - it is automatically considered to be unsecure on its face for classified information. This aspect of the news is total BS and diversionary, IMO.
