FLINT, Mich. — All along, through months of complaints from residents of this city about the peculiar colors and odors they said were coming from their faucets, the overriding message from the authorities here was that the water would be just fine.
Yes, there had been a boil order when fecal coliform bacteria turned up in some neighborhoods last year. And yes, the extra chlorine that was pumped in to solve that problem seemed to create another one — increased levels of a different contaminant.
Still, the guidance from Flint officials about the temporary water supply they switched to in 2014 — partly to save money — sounded assuring. In a notice sent to residents in July, city officials declared: “This is not an emergency. If a situation arises where the water is no longer safe to drink, you will be notified within 24 hours.”
The soothing talk has vanished. In recent weeks, testing has shown increased levels of lead in the blood of some Flint children — and health officials pointed to the water as a possible source.
First, the city advised residents to run their water for five minutes before using it, to use only cold water for drinking and cooking, and to install lead-removing water filters. Then county officials issued an emergency advisory recommending that people not drink Flint’s water unless it is tested for lead or filtered. . .

Flint has been a disaster for decades. Were it not in the same state as Detroit, it would be just as well known as a failed city. As it is, Flint is the unknown step-sister.
The comments are mind-blowing. Clean drinking water is a “universal right.” No thought about how it is accomplished or who pays for it, just “give it to me, I deserve it.”
I don’t trust any municipal water supply, which is why I’ve always used an undersink, 75 GPD, 5-stage RO system with a storage tank and its own faucet. A one year filter supply costs about $35.00 and a replacement Dow brand RO filter can be had from amazon for about $25.00, and needs replacing only every five years or so.
Yes. Filtering is cheap and worthwhile.
The Emergency City Manager AND the city council decided to eliminate the contract with Detroit PRIOR to the new regional water system being up and running. It caused them to use the Flint River as the primary water supply. That would not be a problem if they used the proper chemicals to treat the water. The Detroit Water System used chemicals specifically designed NOT to deteriorate the coating on the lead water pipes. The City of Flint DIDN'T use the same treatment and the linings have been compromised and lead has leached into the water. The same would happen with ANY water source.
The lead isn't in the river it is in the pipes. Every city in America, Nay the World built up prior to 1970 has lead water pipes in some parts of the system. It was the standard since the Roman Empire. Lasted forever and resisted deterioration. Problem was and is it can leach lead into the system and create a once vibrant community into a group of Democrat voters.
The way that is corrected is by use of relining systems for old water systems. Epoxy pipe lining is the standard.

However this system requires specific chemicals NOT be used in order to maintain the pipes and keep the epoxy from deteriorating. The chemicals the water department used caused the problem, NOT THE SOURCE OR THE GOVERNOR!

We grew up about a half mile west of the Flint city limits, had a deep well in a thick yellow clay soil, best water I ever tasted.

I was born and raised in Flint. It was once a model city and for having only a population of 130,000 it was the home of Chevrolet and Buick. Lots of parks, the Buick Open and every policeman was well-paid and required to have a four-year degree. The schools were the best and copied all over the nation. And then the federal government intervened with school busing and various other programs. The result was white flight where blighted neighborhoods became the norm. And then vital people left - the ones who pay the taxes and raise their children to be doctors. When that happened their was no city left as I had always known it. Right now Flint is Detroit’s refuse run-off. It is really sad.
Interesting video. I have read of old hotels where the upper floors were unusable due to low water pressure, because the pipes were restricted due to decades of mineral build up. They use the same method to sandblast the mineral deposits out of the pipes, then seal them with epoxy, all from the inside.
30 years ago, I lived in Creve Coeur, Illinois and officials were saying, “the water is fine”. We were supposed to ignore what appeared to be bits of toilet paper floating in the water.
That little town has had innumerable “boil orders” over the course of the last 40-50 years and it continues to this day.
My family lived there for about 6 months before getting the hell outta there.
