New 3,200-Foot-High Glass Walkway Cracks Underneath Visitors’ Feet
KFOR ^ | OCTOBER 7, 2015

Walking on a glass walkway suspended 3,280 feet (1,000 meters) up a mountain is supposed to be terrifying — but not this terrifying.

Just two weeks after it opened to a nervous public, a walkway in China’s central Henan province was evacuated after cracks appeared.

Reports describe visitors running and screaming in panic as they saw the damage on the U-shaped path at Yuntaishan (Yuntai Mountain) Scenic Park.

“Just witnessed a historic moment — Yuntaishan’s glass walkway is broken,” wrote one user on Weibo (China’s micro-blogging site.)

Sigh. A 1000 meters above SEA LEVEL.

Doesn’t say how high above the ground itself immediately below the walk way. I’ll hazard to guess it’s MUCH less than a 1000 meters above the ground.

“As I was approaching the end of the passage, I heard a sudden loud ‘bang.’ My legs were shaken. I looked down and saw the pane underneath me had shattered.

Sounds like much more than a "crack" in the glass.

That picture is actually a very nice illustration of the consequences of panic. If it were me, and the glass was cracking under my feet, I think I would have a very tight grasp on the steel cables. In fact, they'd have to send out a goon squad to pry me off of it.

I’ve been on a couple of free- hanging wobbly foot bridges over ravines/ rivers in China. The first was so high, that I couldn’t go more than a few yards. Without my heart in my mouth, so turned back.

The second was lower, but jerk college kids thought it was fun to jump up and down.

If merely dropping a mug shatters it, can you imagine a good hail storm? Never mind humans stomping around. You couldn’t pay me enough.

A non-flexible material used where earth tremors are probably frequent? What could possibly go wrong?
