Russian jets hit 12 Islamic State targets in the course of nearly 20 combat flights carried out in Syria on Tuesday, the Defense Ministry said. Command centers and training camps were destroyed in the attacks which threw the extremists into panic.
"Su-34, Su-24M and Su-25 have launched air strikes on 12 objects of logistic infrastructure, command posts, training camps and facilities of militants belonging to terrorist groups allied with Islamic State [IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL],” Igor Konashenkov, Russia’s Defense Ministry spokesman said in a statement on Tuesday.
The Russian jets destroyed an Islamic State army munitions plant outside Damascus as well as two command centers in Deir ez-Zor, according to the ministry’s statement. In the Idlib Governorate, a training camp for IS militants was eliminated, while several IS strongholds came under attack where ammunition depots were blown up.

The real lesson from that episode is that the Hezbollah leader responsible for kidnapping the Russians is alive and kicking. He is still terrorizing. Only a relative was killed. No real justice was achieved and no followup by the KGB.

Putin didn’t bring down MH17, even the US intelligence community was forced to admit it had no evidence of that as far back as last summer.
If the US had the evidence it would have been made public by now. Why no ATC tapes released? Why no cockpit voice recorder tapes released? Why no satellite photos, even though a US satellite was right over the area at the time?
On the other hand, there is no question the US shot down Iran Air 655 in 1988 killing 274 people.
Most likely logistics. It’s expensive to fly bombs in. Far more efficient to use rail or highways, but there aren’t any. So the Russians have to fly in bombs, which is expensive, or transport them by sea, which is far cheaper but takes much longer.
Amateurs think about tactics. Professionals think about logistics.

This is like wars ought to be fought.
Don’t worry about civilian casualties, the civilians will get out of the way fast enough. They will become actual refugees (families with women and children).
When the civilians are gone, you can then pound the snot out of what’s left without worry.
Oh, and get rid of the lawyers. The troops have enough to worry about without worrying about getting charged with some stupid trumped up charge for injuring a civilian.

Well, of course you're right. Putin wouldn't have the slightest idea how to fire a missile. He probably wouldn't have even been able to drive the truck to get there. But he was incompetent enough to provide missiles to people who did know how to shoot down commercial airliners and who were usually intoxicated enough to do something like that.
Just another one of Putin's masterstrokes. Keep rooting for him. But, you might take a look at his track record. Why has his economy just kept getting worse for the last 15 years both when oil was high and when oil was low? Why does everything he does have to lead to failure? Even Hugo Chavez prospered when oil was high.
Putin's a joke. But, he does take off his shirt and for a lot of people that seems to be enough. It really is a strange phenomenon but if you ever wonder why incompetents somehow avoid being fired, his is an interesting case.

“I always love how when Russian troops encounter terrorists the terrorists are frequently all killed in a fire fight. If they are captured there is no “club gitmo” for them”.
If they have even a shred of common sense, it would not be in their interest to be taken prisoner by the Russians, even if on a whim the Russians thought it might be amusing to do so.
Gitmo is probably the best thing that ever happened to the residents there.
