Phyllis Schlafly: GOP Establishment Scrambling For New Plan B
news.investors.com ^ | 10/5/15 | Phyllis Schlafly

Posted on 10/05/2015 6:04:25 PM PDT by cotton1706

The Republican establishment designed the process to deliver the 2016 presidential nomination to a business-friendly moderate who avoids so-called social issues. The consultants who rewrote the party rules after 2012 are now trying to explain to their patrons what went wrong and how to fix it.

Plan A, of course, was to assure the nomination of Jeb Bush, whose views are the perfect reflection of the Republican donor class.

But despite many months of campaigning, $114 million of political funds raised through June 30, and two presidential debates watched by a record-setting average of 24 million people, Jeb Bush has dropped to sixth place, registering only 4% in the latest Pew poll.

One reason for Jeb's poor performance is that he never learned from Ronald Reagan's example of how to prepare for a presidential campaign after his narrow defeat at the 1976 convention in Kansas City. Reagan then traveled the country speaking to small audiences of grass rooters and fielding their questions.

The immigration issue, and the way it has grabbed the attention of the grass roots, made it difficult for Bush to secure the Republican Party nomination in the usual way. Bush will continue to try, of course, and may be able to play insider politics to line up more endorsements and donors with wads of political money.

But the kingmakers always have a Plan B if their first choice stumbles. In 1964, for example, Pennsylvania Gov. William Scranton was carefully groomed as a second-choice alternative who could jump in the race after Nelson Rockefeller failed to stop the conservative Barry Goldwater.

Why not just embrace the madness? Trump is the best shot we have to “Make America Great Again” anyway.

I completely agree.

Trump is the best shot the GOP has had, in a very long time.

He is popular across the policial spectrum. I think he will likely win a landslide.

GOP get with it. You have an outstanding candidate, who is building up support right now.

Embrace him.

And if the voters vote for any other than a Trump/Cruz ticket, they will be losing to the RATS again...

"The debate taking place in the Republican Party today is not focused on that optimistic view of America."

You just keep hanging in there, GOPe, you'll find another Dole, McCain or Romney who will win in a landslide....

He is our only chance out of the total destruction of our country and culture. THE ONLY CHANCE. Caron is a great guy. I love the man (Not for a tough presidency) , Rubio is is a horrible amnesty freak— he is out. FioRINO is a loser!! Bush is a joke. This is an election of Parasites against the HOST. The blood suckers against the workers — we all know that deep down. We must rally behind one man— Trump and reject these establishment cave in power seekers.

The GOPe will never embrace Trump.

This has nothing to do with how right or wrong he is on the issues. It has nothing to do with how much of a landslide he could conceivably win. It has nothing to do with testing the breadth and width of such a landslide would have down ballot elections.

It has everything to do with them being able to buy, control and puppeteer a/the President.

If the king makers can’t make the king, control the king and tell the people with the purses funding them they are in control of the king a popular and effective king is of no use to them.

Establishment plan C

“It may be that the only alternative left for these Republican would-be kingmakers is the late entry of a new candidate to enter the race. We are already hearing rumblings about resurrecting Mitt Romney.”

Please don’t make us go through the Romney nightmare again!

I am not for Trump because I am not for single payor health care

From Trumps 2000 book...

“Trump on health care: “We need, as a nation, to reexamine the single-payer plan, as many individual states are doing.”
What would universal care look like? Nebraska senator Kerrey and others have advocated a version of the Canadian-style, single-payer system in which all payments for medical care are made to a single agency (as opposed to the large number of HMOs and insurance companies, with their diverse rules, claim forms, and déductibles ).

A recent study done by the Massachusetts Medical Society says that in Massachusetts the single-payer plan would save $ 5 billion or about one-seventh of the overhead spent on medical care. Administrative costs across America make up 25 percent of the healthcare dollar, which is two-and-a-half times the cost of healthcare administration in Canada. Doctors might be paid less than they are now, as is the case in Canada, but they would be able to treat more patients because of the reduction in their paperwork.

The Canadian plan also helps Canadians live longer and healthier than Americans. There are fewer medical lawsuits, less loss of labor to sickness, and lower costs to companies paying for the medical care of their employees. If the program were in place in Massachusetts in 1999 it would have reduced administrative costs by $ 2.5 million. We need, as a nation, to reexamine the single-payer plan, as many individual states are doing. But implementing such a plan is not simple. One major problem is that the single-payer plan in Canada is in financial difficulty, as is the nationalized plan in the United Kingdom. We have to improve on the prototype.”

Uh. Huh, sure.

I am not for Trump because I do not trust his policies on guns.

From his 2000 book.

“On guns: “The Republicans walk the NRA line and refuse even limited restrictions. I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I also support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun.”
It’s often argued that the American murder rate is high because guns are more available here than in other countries. After a tragedy like the massacre at Columbine High School, anyone could feel that it is too easy for Americans to get their hands on weapons. But nobody has a good solution. This is another issue where you see the extremes of the two existing major parties. Democrats want to confiscate all guns, which is a dumb idea because only the law-abiding citizens would turn in their guns and the bad guys would be the only ones left armed. The Republicans walk the NRA line and refuse even limited restrictions. I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I also support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun. With today’s Internet technology we should be able to tell within seventy-two hours if a potential gun owner has a record.”
