The term I forgot in my original response to this article is “broach”. In other words the vessel broached becoming parallel to the waves, thus subject to much more intense battering by the waves. Under power the vessel would have been headed INTO the waves. Without power the waves push/turn the vessel into the trough between the waves, and it’s over.

Smaller ship and a good distance away from where El Faro was. Far enough away to have a rescue.

Apparently, El Faro sailed right into it.

Great, now an American Airlines Captain died flying so this story will be buried again.

“My guess is the company puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the captain to save fuel and time.”

I agree.

The bottom line is was probably all about money.

You don’t know that. Many may have, but made it through. Unless you have a source saying that no one else did.

Look, I feel sorry for these lost souls, but they are not the first nor will they be the last to lose their lives at sea. We don’t know if it was stupidity, as you are suggesting, or just bad luck.

I really doubt it. Not into a cat 4 hurricane.

Here is a link to a loop of the forecasts:

JOAQUIN Graphics Archive

You can stop the loop and step through the forecast maps with the controls on the left.

Early on Tuesday 9/29, the storm was forecast to stay well north of the El Faros' presumed course. As you step through the images you can see the storm forecast and center keep moving south and staying east.

That is one very good link and I bookmarked it.

Look at the trends of the forecasts. By the 29th it was evident that the forecast was moving west. By the 30th it was obvious. Any maritime professional sailing in tropical waters should have known better and kept up with the forecasts.

A tropical storm that gets near the Bahamas or Florida can become a major storm in a few hours. What happened with Joaquin reminds me of how Andrew took a sharp turn west and strengthened rapidly.
