Has Anyone Heard of "Inside Obama's Stealth Startup" aka U.S. Digital Service and "18F"?
Fast Company magazine. ^ | July/August 2015 | Jon Gertner

Todd Park, the former chief technology officer of the United States, and Mikey Dickerson, who led a team of 60 engineers at Google and supervised the crew that fixed the Healthcare.gov website last year. Since that time, Park and Dickerson have been steadily recruiting an elite digital corps—a startup team, essentially, built mainly from the ranks of top private-sector companies—and embedding them within the U.S. government. Their purpose is to remake the digital systems by which government operates, to implement the kind of efficiency and agility and effectiveness that define Silicon Valley’s biggest successes, across everything from the IRS to Immigration Services.

Why would the great destroyer of America be involved in something which is described as beneficial to the improvement of how government operates...or is there something here that should concern us all...I can't tell

If I owned a company the size of the Federal government, I would probably be doing the same thing. I am not going to lose sleep over this.

Yes it should concern all the givers not the takers

speaking of givers and takers a friend of the family physician told me that well over a third, closer to a half of the items / data collected by the ACA nobama care has almost nothing to do with health but was only added to the requirements document to be sure only one company could fulfill the requirements. That product was EPIC software...the democratic owners made a $150 million dollar contribution to obamas campaign and to date they have probably made over $150 billion in “fulfilling” that contract

You betch’a - the more the gov knows about you the worse - now digitize all that paper, put everything in a data base, correlate, analyze and .. . Voila ... there you are in all your naked glory - everything is related nothing you have do, say is omitted.

You - for all intents and purposes - have ceased to be a living breathing being and are now a collection of digitized ones and zeros - an open record for all to read and do what they will.

The answer is a group of people who use annoying analytic scripts in webpages while feeding processing and database chores to the cloud (Amazon and Google).

0bama and his friends at Google and Amazon will know when you last sneezed and how you voted and then apply conditioning techniques to change your mind and attitude by changing what you experience across the entire Internet.

...remake the digital systems by which government operates, to implement the kind of efficiency and agility and effectiveness that define Silicon Valley’s biggest successes...

What a fool's errand that is. Nobody in government is interested in efficiency, low-cost of operations, good customer service, good support, agility, speed or innovation. Those are anathema to the people who work in government. They want cushy rote jobs that require no thinking or talent..and pay you for 40 hours even though the "work" may take only 15 hours. Government unions will assure nothing changes.

These people taking these jobs should get frustrated within a few months after realizing it's impossible to push on the end of a wet rope.

I've spent much of the last 25 years fixing crap code in DoD systems. They of lots of complex code with aging infrastructure. The business logic is wrapped tightly into the code, so extracting it and "modernizing" it is a nightmare. Anybody who buys the BS that Obama is going to insert a dream team of computer science genius to "fix" inefficient government code is smoking some good weed. Turn the "genius" corps loose on "healthcare.gov" if they are so damn good. Fix that steaming pile of poop before claiming a panacea for other systems.

But that’s exactly who some of these guys are, according to this article. They came in to fix healthcaredotgov...it’s kind of alarming that he’s picked all this top talent to work on making the tech infrastructure of government work. Efficiently.

I have come to be suspicious and leary of anything this man does.

But it’s not a company. I favor decentralizing government data as much as possible and not linking non-related functions.

U.S. Digital Services and 18F are where Startup talent from SF runs to when their SF/SV venture dies.

Both of those new services have been pushing Open Source code into every government agency...which quickly gets hacked as soon as the code goes in.

None of their sharable modules of code are secure. They are slicing up what little government security existed.

18F is particularly vocal on Twitter. All Open Source, all of the time.

Hackers’ wet dream.
