In the mid-1990s Australia and Great Britain both instituted what were virtually complete bans on firearm possession.
Obama referenced the bans thus:

The US Census 2014 Total population estimate 318,957,056. The gun ownership estimate (Statistic Brain Research Institute) sets forth ownership at approximately 34%, 108,445,400. Of which there are a high percentage of guns owners with multiple guns. Certainly not 320,000,000 gun owners, maybe 320,000,000 guns.
