Not enough people understand the Barbarian Invasions that brought down the Western Roman Empire. Yes, there were some big battles during that period of history, but the primary cause of the fall of Rome was not military defeat.

Rome allowed foreigners to move into the Empire and retain their tribal customs. The demographics became diluted and the culture became much more tribal and a lot less Roman. Everything spiraled out of Imperial control and eventually the city of Rome was sacked without a great deal of trouble.It didn't happen overnight, but when it started going in that direction it didn't take long for it become fairly inevitable.

This is the path that Europe is traveling.
