MOSCOW (Reuters) - International monitors say they have spotted a new kind of Russian weapons system in rebel-held Ukraine this week, possible evidence of Moscow's continued interest in Ukraine even as it focuses on Syria.

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, which is monitoring a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine, reported that its monitors had seen a mobile TOS-1 'Buratino' weapons system for the first time.

The Buratino is equipped with thermobaric warheads which spread a flammable liquid around a target and then ignite it. It can destroy several city blocks in one strike and cause indiscriminate damage.

A step up in firepower for the 'rebels' in Ukraine. This system was first used during the 80s in Afghanistan and later in the 90s against Chechen mines and personnel who had dug in around Grozny.

The presence of this system would seem to indicate an offensive is in the works.

Putin knows how weak Obama is. He is on the march in Eastern Europe and in Syria.

Not exactly long range - less than 5 miles.

quote “hermobaric warheads which spread a flammable liquid around a target and then ignite it”

Putin knows how to fight a war!

While Obama is trying desperately to figure out who to bow to!

What it lacks in range, it makes up for in kick-assiness.

First time the OSCE has seen it, but not the first time it has been seen in Southeast Ukraine.

It was used last summer at the Donetsk Airport, with one reported destroyed (It has to get CLOSE to the target to be effective), and seen on video during the Debaltseve offensive in January.

Unlike the precision munitions employed by the muslims. </sarcasm>

Which is why searching for likely used words in better than using a complete title.

Which tells you their strategy. They are preparing for close in battle - something that we have no stomach for...Obama wants to fight from a distance with drones only.

Thermobaric Warhead

If you can use this description, you got a good selling point as a Govt Weapons Developer.

Meanwhile, look up FAE (Fuel Air Explosive). It got a lot of bad press = ‘sucks out the oxygen, suffocating people’.

The Russki discription sounds more like FAE. Note that FAE damage is pressure within the fuel vapor cloud only.

So ... city blocks, indiscriminate ... BS

Look at the photo on the right. Buratinos were taken there already in April. It is lazy observers who only spotted them now.

Range states 400m to 4KM. I’ll bet an airburst at 400m would make the crew rethink their career choice.
