Vatican says private 'audience' in D.C. was with gay ex-student, not Kim Davis
Los Angeles Times ^ | 10/02/2015 | Tom Kington

A week after Pope Francis met Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk jailed for her refusal to issue marriage licenses for same-sex couples, the Vatican on Friday suggested that she exploited the meeting to promote her views, denied that the pope fully supports her and cast doubt on her account of the encounter.

The Vatican later noted that the only “audience” Francis had at the gathering in Washington was with a former student of the pope, Yayo Grassi, an openly gay Argentine who along with his longtime partner and some friends met with Francis.

Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi said in a statement that Grassi, "who had already met other times in the past with the pope, asked to present several friends to the pope during the pope’s stay in Washington, D.C."

A video posted online shows Grassi embracing the pope and introducing him to his partner, as well as an Argentine woman and some Asian friends.

The statements together seemed intended to distance the pope from Davis.

Davis spent nearly a week in jail after she defied a Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriage in the United States. Last week, she said she had met Francis at the Nunciature, the Vatican's U.S. office, in Washington on Sept 24 during his U.S. visit, where she said he told her during a 15-minute meeting to “stay strong.”

"Just knowing that the pope is on track with what we're doing and agreeing, you know, it kind of validates everything,” she told ABC News.

Reports of the meeting between Davis and the pope were taken by conservative groups as evidence that Francis fully supported her refusal to authorize same-sex marriages. Backers of such unions charged that the pope had been used by Davis.

RE: How does this square with them confirming the meeting earlier?

There was a meeting with Kim Davis.

The only question is whether or not as reported by the New York Times, it was a 15 minute meeting with Kim and her husband where he told her to “Be strong”, or whether it was a meeting together with a group of people.

If the latter, then either Kim Davis is lying or the New York Times’ source is lying.

At any rate, this new report from the L.A. Times seem to be giving us mixed messages. It’s looking like the private meeting was NOT with Kim Davis but with the gay friend of the Pope’s who introduced him to his gay partner.

Well based on the link you provided from the Catholic News Agency, it looks like Kim Davis or her spokesperson is not giving the right impression to the public.

Since according to your link :

... the Pope “did not enter into the details” of her situation, and specified that the meeting with her “should not be considered a form of support of her position in all of its particular and complex aspects.”

Then, the reports about the Pope telling Kim Davis to “stay strong” might have come from Davis herself. Which seems to be a false impression she is trying to give.

Great question. If the Pope does to endorse her views then what does the Catholic church know is marriage then?

RE: Why does he have to send his lackeys out to address this?

This is the problem with Pope Francis -— NO MORAL CLARITY.

He either gives general statements that can be taken by opposing groups as an endorsement of THEIR VIEW, or fails to clarify them such that his defenders have to clarify it for him.

Now, by meeting with this gay couple and having no reports regarding what they discussed, this meeting is now being construed as his having NO OBJECTION to gay marriage.

If a Pope, the principal magistrate of the church, can’t give moral clarity to his flock, what the heck is he there for?

I wouldn’t go that far. I would say that he is being VERY UNCLEAR, VERY OBSCURE in his stance on gay marriage.

RE: Great question. If the Pope does to endorse her views then what does the Catholic church know is marriage then?

Well, we have this interview on his plane flying back to Rome:

http://www.theguardian.com/world/video/2015/sep/30/pope-francis-kim-davis-plane-interview-video

“Speaking on a flight back to Rome, Pope Francis on Monday said government officials have a ‘human right’ to refuse to discharge their duties, such as issuing marriage licenses to gay people, if they feel it violates their conscience.”

Unless the above report from the Guardian is also untrue....

This Pope seems to want to destroy the Catholic Church like Obama and the US.

I have no respect for the Church over this handling of what is Church doctrine.

He seemed to go out of his way to tell all people that to disregard our laws and borders

“God forgive me I am ashamed of our Pope.”

Trust Me, You are not Alone!

God Forgive me Also and Give Me Guidance and Strength in this time of Darkness.

VERY UNCLEAR, VERY OBSCURE...

is the exact opposite of what a Vicar of Christ (Pope or Bishop) is supposed to do.

Repentance along with "Go and sin no more" should be the ONLY emphasis/stressed PUBLICALLY concerning these PR sessions with open sinners. An openly unrepentant sinner being a lecturer at a Mass says what?

Not sure who you’re referring to. Are you saying Thomas Rosica is a pedophile?

I would say to the Catholics on this forum, put your trust in Jesus Christ and not a man. I don’t care what they call him - pope, pastor, vicar of Christ -whatever - Jesus is the head of the church - and if anyone doesn’t uphold the tenets of the Catholic Church and the Bible - then maybe it’s time to ask for God’s guidance.

Amen. I trust in Christ’s promise. But He never promised the gates would not make a lot of headway.

No wonder the Pope is meddling in our politics; he takes positions on everything and when it gets a bit controversial he backpedals. He’d make a good member of the Bush family.

If I were Kim Davis, I would at this point be thanking God that I belong to something called the Apostolic Church.

It also explains why this pope and Obama are such great friends.

Nice teaching job there Padre Pope. Must have missed all those parts about how the Church feels about sodomy.

What an unmitigated disaster this Pontiff has been for the Church.
