CNN Exclusive: Pope held private meeting with same-sex couple in U.S.

The day before Pope Francis met anti-gay county clerk Kim Davis in Washington last week, he held a private meeting with a longtime friend from Argentina who has been in a same-sex relationship for 19 years.

Yayo Grassi, an openly gay man, brought his partner, Iwan, as well several other friends to the Vatican Embassy on September 23 for a brief visit with the Pope. A video of the meeting shows Grassi and Francis greeting each other with a warm hug.

In an exclusive interview with CNN, Grassi declined to disclose details about the short visit, but said it was arranged personally by the Pope via email in the weeks ahead of Francis' highly anticipated visit to the United States.

"Three weeks before the trip, he called me on the phone and said he would love to give me a hug," Grassi said.

The meeting between Grassi and the Pope adds another intriguing twist to the strange aftermath of Francis' first-ever trip to the United States. Since news broke on Tuesday of Francis' meeting with Davis, conservatives have cheered the seemingly implicit endorsement, while liberals have questioned how much the Pope knew about her case.

In a statement on Friday, the Vatican said that the meeting with Davis was not intended as a show of support for her cause and said "the only real audience granted by the Pope at the nunciature (embassy) was with one of his former students and his family."

"That was me," Grassi said.

Grassi said that Pope Francis taught him in literature and psychology classes at Inmaculada Concepcion high school in Flores, Argentina, from 1964-1965.

I personally know a lot of Catholics who are dusting off their resumes and getting ready to send them around to other churches.

Each day I edge a little closer to becoming one of them.

Jesus said Luke 17:32. Remember Lot’s wife.

There does appear to be far more like
Lot’s wife, than practicing sodomites...Misery sure does love company.

Whew! Guess this cancels out his meeting with Kim Davis. Good thing! Now liberals of all religions or no religion can still worship him.

It’s not that - it’s that this is the pope’s way of signaling which side he’s on in the gay issue.

No pope or bishop, no matter how personally debauched or stupid or politically oriented should be allowed to drive us away from the Church. We must keep our eyes glued to Christ and the power of the Sacraments and know the Magisterial teachings of the true Church Christ founded and soldier on.

Christ’s Church has withstood 2,000 years of varied attacks.

It has survived worse Pope’s than this, as well.

I’ll hang in there.

But, I will become more vocal against this Pope if he is not supporting 2,000 years of Catholic teaching. I’ll be listening intently at the upcoming Synod on the Family. Especially, for what is not said or made ambiguous.

No Catholic sees him as a demi-god. Only the press views him that way...

But the problem is that he’s the titular head of the Church, and he’s out there running around showing his total contempt for Catholic doctrine on all levels.

Demigod? I have to chuckle at folks in this English/Irish/Scotch/German country who have inherited these quaint little notions.

My family lived for centuries a stone’s throw from the Papal States. In other words, to most of you he was just a faraway religious figure. To many of us he was an in-our-face political ruler. Trust me when I say no one there anyway is under any delusion about papal demigod status.

The Catholic Church is the largest body of Christians in the world, and this man, for better or worse, is at the head of it. That’s why people care.

And a total tin ear as to how his actions are being perceived.

I wonder sometimes whether Benedict didn’t see this coming and was determined to stick around in the wings just in case.
