Umpqua Shooting: More Blood on Media Hands (copycat effect)
Ammoland ^ | 2 October, 2015 | Dean Weingarten

The media knows that the more attention that they pay to mass killing perpetrators, the more incentive they create for mass killings.  The effect is known as the “Copycat Effect“.  It is a well known and researched phenomena.  Endless promotion of these tragic events and the publicity given to the perpetrators is far more of a causal factor than the Second Amendment.

CBS news relates the latest evidence that media coverage of his name and face was one of the primary motivations for the Umpqua shooter.   From cbsnews.com:

In one post on the blog about Vester Flanagan, the man who killed the reporter and cameraman in Virginia, Mercer apparently wrote, “I have noticed that so many people like [Flanagan] are alone and unknown, yet when they spill a little blood, the whole world knows who they are. A man who was known by no one, is now known by everyone. His face splashed across every screen, his name across the lips of every person on the planet, all in the course of one day. Seems like the more people you kill, the more you’re in the limelight.”

Over 20 years ago,  Clayton Cramer wrote a paper on the ethical problems of promoting mass killings in the media.   It was published in a the Journal of Mass Media Ethics, 9:1 [Winter 1993-94].  It won First Place, Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Ethics Prize, 1993, Undergraduate Division.

The old media know about the copycat effect. They do not care that their promotion of mass killing costs lives. They believe they gain political power, they know they gain profits.

The gunman singled out Christians for execution. Yet I heard nothing about his conversion to Islam or any “Allahu Akbar” rantings during the assault. So the question arises: did he not convert or rant, or is the enemedia covering it up?

It’s a shame we have to think that way, isn’t it?

Has any of the old media mentioned Hate Crime for picking out Christians for execution? Has Obama ever said we need criminal control before we try gun control? Has he mentioned that two weekends in Chicago usually have more murders than this incident?

The old media know about the copycat effect.

Yes, there's the copycat effect, and there's the "Thomas Becket effect".

Obama has famously been up and down and across the nation, shouting from the podium:

Will no one rid me of these troublesome Christians?

Barack Obama's Oregon mini-me seems to have obliged his wishes...

Has Obama ever said we need criminal control before we try gun control?

No, but Obama has CERTAINLY been agitated about controlling Christians to the point where Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Ben Carson and others have called him out on his anti-Christian hate speech and his little War On Christians.

Was the Oregon slime merely implementing Obama's Christian Control measures?

Heard the shooter’s father on the news talking and seemed he had an accent, possibly Irish. Anyone know?

Part of the problem is the 24 hour news cycle. With that much time you have to fill it with content. And let's be honest, how many of us were glued to either the radio or tv yesterday to watch coverage of the event unfold.

We are part of the problem.

I find all of this very odd. We are now seeing stories in the MSM that we should not disclose the names of the perpetrators or give them any publicity. The police and politicians are echoing it. Yet, in the case of the church shootings in SC, there was no such compunction.

Something very strange is happening with the coverage of the shooter in this case. Is it because Chris Harper-Mercer is black or that there is a Muslim connection or both?

We are part of the problem.

The long and the short of the matter is that journalism is entertainment.

“News” is a superficial category, “There’s nothing more worthless than yesterday’s newspaper” is true because in general today’s newspaper - or broadcast - is of very little value. Granted there was the incident on 9/11 in which passengers aboard a hijacked airliner took action because they were able to get word of the fate of three other hijacked airliners - but in general, when you’re listening to news reports it’s about things you can’t do a thing about.

“The republican principle demands that the deliberate sense of the community should govern the conduct of those to whom they intrust the management of their affairs; but it does not require an unqualified complaisance to every sudden breeze of passion or to every transient impulse which the people may receive from the arts of men, who flatter their prejudices to betray their interests.” ― Alexander Hamilton
To find those who would "flatter your prejudices to betray your interests,” look first at journalists - and then at politicians who are made to look good by journalists.

Death numbers from a city run by democrats - - with gun control laws up the wazoo....

Odd how President Obama and the press don’t care about these deaths. Could it have something to do with these deaths don’t push ‘democrat’ gun control lies?

I did see something on the WaPo or CNN article saying that Federal hate crimes investigators are taking part in the investigation.

Vester Flanagan........ The MSM moved him off the NEWS as soon as it could after the alternate media published the information that he was gay, Black and crazy like his “IF I HAD SON” prototype.

Nice cartoon.

Can you send a source?

I could not find it on the web. It seems unusual for Matt Wuerker. The ones I have seen in Politico have been reliably leftist.

This destroys a primary leftist meme.

Maybe that is why I am having trouble finding it.
