Many Russian analysts maintain that Russia's intervention in Syria is driven by Vladimir Putins desire to reinstate the status of the world's largest nation as a superpower and his genuine belief that the United States has deliberately seeded chaos in the region to secure its reign there. While this assessment may be accurate, it only reveals part of the Russian president's intentions.
Russias military engagement in Syria comes on the backdrop of three major factors: a serious threat to the survival of President Bashar Assad's regime, Russia's old Middle Eastern client; Putin's success at securing the occupation of Crimea and expanding Russian territorial presence in Ukraine; and the evident weakness, even disarray, of the Obama administration in handling the war against Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL.
Two additional factors may have helped Putin make this risky decision now: Iran's strength in the region, following its success at securing a highly favorable nuclear deal; and the wave of Syrian refugees who threaten the unity and stability of Europe, thus mitigating its threat to Russian interests in Ukraine.

I've seen plenty of twisted logic in my day, but this one pretty much takes the cake. Foment chaos in which tens of thousands of Christians and others die/are killed/persecuted/crucified and somehow that secures the Middle East for the United States.
WTF??!!
I would say it is the result of US screwing up in the Middle East. Removing dictators and hoping the primitives in those countries would become freedom loving, tolerant people was a colossal error. As far as I can tell, Assad is one of the few sane people left in the Middle East and is certainly no worse than the rabble that wants to depose him.
There is no good side there.
You either interpret the US actions as intentional or gross incompetence on a scale never demonstrated by US leaders. Germany thought it impossible that US leadership would remove Patton from his command for slapping a cowardly solder, but that was the real story. You must admit that the mess looks pretty deliberate.
It sure was! You can't "give" freedom and democracy to people who have no idea what it means, and who haven't fought, shed their own blood and died for it.
In short, freedom isn't a gift, it has to be earned.
History tells us that time and again.
Pretty deliberate? Oh hell yeah it's deliberate.
yes

Welcome to the Age of Obama.
Have you not been paying attention?
Hard to make sense of most of this as the war aims are either specifically vague or don’t make much sense.
But maybe - all the players are playing chess not checkers and the ultimate goals are Israel - maybe the islamic hordes have decided that Syria, Lebanon and the Golan are the ultimate way into Israel and this is a opening gambit in that ultimate confrontation?
Just tossing out ideas - but maybe Putin is positioning his forces to prevent that event from taking place?
Putin has long plaid this game. The second war in Chechnya, he allowed foreign extremists in so as to make illegitimate the genuine freedom seeking Chechens.
Also everyone forgets that Assad propped IsIs initially for the same reasons
Assad let what would become ISIS operate from Syria, Russia supported this regime for decades, the same regime that helped blow up the US Marines in Beirut, the family dictatorship. I’m not about to concede all of this is uncle Sam’s blame.
Plenty of stories indicate Syrian forces have indeed helped the Christian killers, ISIS.
