Bowie Resource Partners plans to lay off nearly 100 people at its Bowie #2 Mine near Paonia in the latest setback to coal employment in the North Fork Valley.
The company said Tuesday that it anticipates laying off 78 workers and 19 contractors from the mine, where 181 full-time employees and 19 contractors work now.

it is continuing to evaluate the market for the mine’s coal after losing a contract to sell to the Tennessee Valley Authority a year ago. The loss of that contract caused Bowie to eliminate about 150 jobs at that time.
Bowie operates three underground mines in Utah along with the one near Paonia.

Its funding is based on enrollment, which topped out at more than 5,500 in 2009 and is around 4,800 now, he said. The district was forced to make some significant staffing cuts about two years ago.

And unfortunately once we kill off coal, what will replace it if the supply of Nat Gas or the other sources of power run short. Nothing. We don’t have a plan. All of our eggs are in one basket and the wind/solar basket has a hole in its bottom. Nukes? Heck no. Hydro? Absolutely not. Nat Gas? Okay for now. But nat gas will follow the supply and demand rule as coal dies away. Expect it to cost a lot more to heat and light our homes.
And everything will cost more because everything is produced using power.
BTW, that is the real goal people — to force Americans to use less energy by squeezing the middle class into submission BY MAKING ENERGY EXPENSIVE!

We have huge Natural Gas fields and many well heads are tapped and could be opened.
If you google earth the area south of Bloomfield and Navajo Lake in northern New Mexico you can see vast areas of those wells with the dirt roads leading into them.
Our Natural Gas resources are immense.

Great. Because all of our eggs are in that basket. Also, don’t you need permits to open up those wells? And is fracking involved?
I simply stated that we have huge natural gas fields and gave one example which is in northern NM.
I think NM produces about 6% of the nations natural gas.
Yes, permits are required and yes there is some fracking in NM.

Fifteen years ago the naysayers were running around in a panic screaming doom and gloom that we were running out of natural gas!
I had a copy of Power Magazine and it showed about fifty new power plants going in and only one or two would be coal. The rest natural gas. I wondered where they were going to get the gas.
In 2001 I went to California and passed two new natural gas power plants going up.
In 2002 I again went to California and passed those same half built plants shut down with weeds growing all around.
A few years later they began to develop new gas fields and fracking began to bring on the gas.
A quick look showed those abandoned gas power plants were now being built again.
We need a good backup for power plant fuel and coal is still the best available.

I was back “home” there a two months ago and two years ago. Two years ago there was lots of gas field work going on clear from San Juan County clear through the panhandle of Oklahoma.
I noticed two months ago that there was still lots of work in NW NM but the panhandle of Oklahoma had less going on.
Central Oklahoma still has quite a bit going on, but things have slowed down.
Thanks for sharing that. At least the wells can be tapped if necessary when we have a real president again.
Well good. Because it is soon to be our only source of energy — nukes are off the table, hydro too. Fusion appears to be hopeless.
So we had better make sure that it can sustain us for the next 20-30 years or longer. That includes when everyone is forced to (or coerced into)driving electric cars and demand for energy increases dramatically.
My point is that the problem might be getting the nat gas out of the ground even though there are huge reserves.
Also, demand for energy will only increase when everyone starts driving electric cars (which is part of the grand agenda of the Left).
Bottom line: I prefer two viable sources of energy versus just one. Doubles our chances that way.
