AUSTIN - A University of Texas at El Paso professor has hung a "no-guns" sign outside of his classroom, saying he opposes the recently-signed campus carry law and hopes it never goes into effect.

"The minute that the governor signed that legislation, I put up my sign outside the door," David Smith-Soto, a senior lecturer of multimedia journalism at UTEP, told the Chronicle of Higher Education. "Guns belong wherever they belong, but they don't belong in my classroom — or anybody's classroom, for that matter."

The students in his class should execute a blanket "drop" and leave him unemployed.

there is, I believe, a general principles of law that states that, if there is a disadvantage due to ambiguity in a written document, the disadvantage falls to the one who wrote it. I find the document, “No Guns” ambiguous. In my view, I see it as an announcement that the classroom has no guns and needs some. I can only help by bringing mine.

I couldn't get past the pay wall at the link, so I didn't read the entire story. But if Smith-Soto is a full-time “senior lecturer” in journalism at UTEP, I would guess he makes $60-80K per academic year and teaches 3 courses per semester. He wouldn't have tenure at that rank, and he most likely wouldn't be entitled to a sabbatical.

I guess he doesn’t realize that sign (red circle with slash over silhouette of a pistol) carries absolutely no legal weight in Texas.

The only thing that carries any weight at all in this state is the 30-06 sign. Or the new 30-07 sign, I guess.

I’ll have to take your word about the $30k; I tried to look it up on line but did not find it.

Better face that sign to the south. Bullets from Mexico have hit campus buildings more than once. It wouldn’t take much for the Zeta’s or some other gang to hold a classroom hostage. For the sake of the students, let’s hope it isn’t his classroom.

Concealed carry on campus will become Texas law in 2016. While some limited areas such as labs can be declared gun free zones, classrooms and dorms cannot. Only private universities can opt out of campus carry.

Concealed carry was recently approved for on campus in Texas. . .for a university the law takes effect 1 Sept 2016, and for community colleges the law takes effect 1 Sep 2017.

The guy doesn’t have a PhD. . .and a “Senior Lecturer” at a university without a PhD is quite unheard of. . .unless you have the proper political, sexual, activist bent. . .

Yeah, I can see a lunatic hellbent on committing mass murder walk up to his room “darnit, a sign! I can’t go in there.”
