Guy selling Volkswagen fears ‘he may be stuck with it’

“The way it is now they get more horsepower and better performance in the hidden illegal mode, why bring your car in for an upgrade that will deteriorate performance and cause components to maybe wear out faster and get lower miles per gallon?,” asks durhamgti. “VW will have to wave a big carrot in front of their customers to get them to comply.” One person wants to know how he can turn a buck in the market based on the news. “Should I buy VW’s stock since it took a dive or should I buy stock in another promising diesel vehicle from another make? hmmm…,” asked GabelessToGabeTown. See also: Volkswagen scandal slams car companies across Europe as problems widen. On Reddit the comments have gone even further afield, covering everything from the first class-action lawsuits being filed to environmental standards. “You can force me to take my car to emission testing, but nowhere does it say that my car has to be honest about it!” wrote inpu. The real fallout from the scandal has yet to begin for Volkswagen owners, especially those looking to sell, according to one expert.

EFI Live does it for diesels. Not sure if they have for VW. Yet.

. . .after which, an aftermarket chip for the car, with the higher performance, and a toggle to drop it back into “emissions” mode. . .

If it’s in good shape and has a clean Carfax, I’d probably be willing to give him $500 for it so he won’t have to worry about it. Since diesel tends to cost a good bit more than gasoline, perhaps I could get an adapter kit and swap out the engine.

Keep an eye on prices. My money says the whole brand gets tarnished (Lord knows the stock was down 18% yesterday)— the diesels are the only product line at fault— and that creates a buying opportunity for consumers. VW will ramp up sales of non-diesel product to compensate.

Maybe that really is VW’s answer; turn off the restricted emissions on the car and install an air pump to dilute the tailpipe emissions to an acceptable level? No loss of performance at speed, and a little bit more noise at idle.

Of course the EPA will offer an alternative to all concerned drivers...

It’s always sorta been that way. All the EPA is doing is making sure everyone knows about reprogramming mods and giving the guys who do it a ton of work.

Prediction: VW will be compelled by the EPA to recall the diesels for a software “update” that screws up the mileage, the hacker community starts to get some more interest in software mods for vehicles and word starts getting out that it is trivial to get improved performance and control over your vehicle by turning off NHTSA and EPA mandated software controls.

Except the performance is high, and you know it is clean because it passes the smog checks.

Except you might not be able to sell or trade in the vehicle.

“You can force me to take my car to emission testing, but nowhere does it say that my car has to be honest about it!”

Actually, this is the way the regulation is written-- the car must meet the emissions standards "during the test."

It doesn't specify before or afterwards.

One thing I am curious about is if a law or rule was actually broken. Is there something that prohibits a vehicle from changing it’s operating parameters or is the EPA just pissed that VW found a clever way to give them the finger?

No, exhaust MASS OUTPUT of certain gas species is measured. Even the certain gas species in the test site ambient air are measured so dilution with ambient air is accounted for.

Ho many GM and Chrysler products are doing the same thing?

Workers at the VW plant in Tennessee just turned down the UAW-- this is the payback.

There are way better tunes out there than the factory tunes for these cars. Malone, Rocketchip and Kerma come to mind.

They will let you delete unwanted parts.
