Stephen Colbert confronts Ted Cruz over Reagan; senator booed on gay marriage

Let's Talk About Reagan For A Second (video)

WASHINGTON — Comedian Stephen Colbert needled Sen. Ted Cruz about gay marriage and some inconvenient truths about his hero Ronald Reagan, in a late night TV exchange.

“Guys, guys, however you feel, he’s my guest so please don’t boo him,” Colbert said at one point, when Cruz was defending his opposition to same-sex marriage and a few hisses could be heard from the audience.

...

“Live within our means, stop bankrupting our kids and grandkids, and follow the Constitution,” Cruz said, summing up his platform.

“And no gay marriage,” Colbert interjected, setting off a back-and-forth in which Cruz repeatedly insisted that the Supreme Court should have left the definition of marriage to the states, in keeping with the 10th Amendment.

“It doesn’t mention marriage in the Constitution,” Colbert said.

“That’s exactly why it’s a question for the states,” Cruz shot back, shortly before the hissing.

...

Cruz got roughly 10 minutes of airtime over two segments. Colbert asked how he would win over anyone who isn’t especially conservative. Cruz invoked Reagan, saying his following among “Reagan Democrats” showed that the right principles can appeal across the spectrum.

Colbert pointed to two Reagan policies that likely would preclude him or anyone from winning the GOP nomination now: He raised taxes, and he enacted an amnesty for millions of people in the country illegally. If Cruz is so enamored of Reagan, would he embrace those policies?

“No, of course not,” Cruz said.

Colbert also tried to get Cruz to concede that compromise is valuable, and doesn’t mean he “capitulated to the Devil.” He asked whether, as a strongly religious person, Cruz views his opponents as evil.

“There’s nothing diabolical about you,” Cruz said.

“Just going by what you said.”

1. No you are putting the worst possible interpretation on what I said.

2. I said I had been calling him weak since I saw the picture, not that viewing one picture was the totality of my information.

Just because he won’t trash an opponent doesn’t mean he won’t stand up for himself. Have you heard the guy speak and respond to stupid questions? Check out his convo with that Juno actress or any other time he gets “confronted” on the campaign trail. Sen. Cruz makes his opponents look like fools when he gives an answer.

OTOH, nearly all of Reagan’s cabinet members and well-known staffers have turned out to be RINOs.

Don’t bust my chops here. I asked you a question and when you answered, I took you literally at your word. I don’t play silly guessing games.

Say what you mean if you want to be understood.

I don’t have to check out anything - I follow Ted’s campaign just as closely as I do Trumps. Look, I diss Trump on occasion too - so, it isn’t anything personal. Read my tagline.

“I took you literally at your word.”

Nonsense. You insulted me, taking an unreasonably bad interpretation of what I said as your excuse.

“I don’t play silly guessing games.”

Really? You certainly play silly games. This one was described as follows by another poster here:

“I can explain (some alleged contradiction) quite easily. I see it here on FR all the time. Somebody latches onto a simple misinterpretation of a statement because it gives that person the perfect venue to strut and preen in defense of his own ecclesiastical/political/moral existence. Thus has Satan snuck in to the discussion all unnoticed. The saints—I believe it was a hated Jesuit as a matter of fact—have taught us that in a dispute, the disputing parties have a duty to attach the most innocent and least malicious motives and explanations to the other’s statements. It is part of the virtue of charity. It is what anyone would want from you, and it is plain common sense.

Now, there’s a recipe for elevating the level of discourse in the blink of an eye.”

He was right, of course, but there are just so many people and so little time...

OK, you just want to pick a fight. So far you have said nothing but provocative nonsense.

Bye.

“OK, you just want to pick a fight.”

I want to pick a fight?

*I* want to pick a fight?

You are the one who picked a fight with me. What, are you used to getting away with that kind of behavior because you are a female?

“Bye.”

I watch you waddle away, madam, with purest joy.
