WASHINGTON — Comedian Stephen Colbert needled Sen. Ted Cruz about gay marriage and some inconvenient truths about his hero Ronald Reagan, in a late night TV exchange.
“Guys, guys, however you feel, he’s my guest so please don’t boo him,” Colbert said at one point, when Cruz was defending his opposition to same-sex marriage and a few hisses could be heard from the audience.

“Live within our means, stop bankrupting our kids and grandkids, and follow the Constitution,” Cruz said, summing up his platform.
“And no gay marriage,” Colbert interjected, setting off a back-and-forth in which Cruz repeatedly insisted that the Supreme Court should have left the definition of marriage to the states, in keeping with the 10th Amendment.
“It doesn’t mention marriage in the Constitution,” Colbert said.
“That’s exactly why it’s a question for the states,” Cruz shot back, shortly before the hissing.

Cruz got roughly 10 minutes of airtime over two segments. Colbert asked how he would win over anyone who isn’t especially conservative. Cruz invoked Reagan, saying his following among “Reagan Democrats” showed that the right principles can appeal across the spectrum.
Colbert pointed to two Reagan policies that likely would preclude him or anyone from winning the GOP nomination now: He raised taxes, and he enacted an amnesty for millions of people in the country illegally. If Cruz is so enamored of Reagan, would he embrace those policies?
“No, of course not,” Cruz said.
Colbert also tried to get Cruz to concede that compromise is valuable, and doesn’t mean he “capitulated to the Devil.” He asked whether, as a strongly religious person, Cruz views his opponents as evil.
“There’s nothing diabolical about you,” Cruz said.

President Reagan did sign Simpson-Mazzoli, which gave an explicitly one time amnesty to what was then 3-6 million illegals. It was one of his few mistakes. It was supposed to be in exchange for much increased border security — which the Democrats who controlled Congress repeatedly scuttled. IOW, they reneged on the deal and betrayed him.
Now there are 12-20 million illegals, at least, in this country. Amnesty today is a different thing, bad as it was then, and is effectively prohibited by Simpson-Mazzoli.
Ted Cruz does just fine standing up for himself and our principles. He tries to do so in the most civil manner possible. Nothing wrong with that.
There is compromise and compromise.
If I’m getting 75 percent of what I want today, I can “compromise” enough to put off the other 25 percent until tomorrow. We move the ball a long way towards our end of the field.
But if they’re getting 75 percent, that’s a compromise I will stand firmly and oppose.
Nor can we fault people for falling for other liberal/progressive policies a century ago when they were newly on the market. But now we have a record of failure and the harm they have caused people. To advocate them now only shows a desire and willingness to do maximal damage to others just for your own self-aggrandizement --power, money, and maybe sex.
No, nothing wrong with that except he will get eaten alive by the left.

Our people should avoid the viper’s pit that liberal television is especially when it is a comedy format which makes the guest easy fodder for ridicule with a very liberal audience that is eager to throw rotten tomatoes at anyone who is not a liberal This is how the liberals shape public perception. When a slick comedian ridicules someone the at home audience sees the conservative as being a fool and they do not want to identify with the fool. These tactics have been used by the media to mold pubic opinion for a long time especially among young people who are very image conscious and would rather die than feel foolish.
Colbert is very courageous in his own element, I would like to see him go before a conservative crowd in Texas.
Cruz is like a sunday school boy waiting for the punk to throw mud on his suit. Our people have to get it through their heads that the left is rotten and will always fight dirty.
Just how many of these Colbert style slicksters are there anyway? There is John Stewart and the late night guys.
I would like to see him run into a crowd of conservative Texans in a dark alley.

Well, that’s a good way to make a decision - look at a picture.
I do say so, and so does fact, so does reality, so does history. I’ve written WIDELY on the “new tone” Bush/Rove strategy - and how they NEVER EVER even confronted liberalism as such, never ever went ideological or philosophical.
Cruz may or may not get rough enough, but he dad gummed sure will go hard ideological when called for. And he will confront on that basis too. Bush? No es mucho.
Did anyone even watch it? The audience booing was barely audible before Colbert told them to be quiet and respect his guest. I can’t think of anyone else that would do that.
I gave that a lot of thought, and I agree that in general Trump is not a fan of the #2 spot. However, this may be a different situation for him. He could do the speeches that he enjoys (he likes them far more than Cruz does) and help to guide policy. I decided that he just might take that spot, where he would never accept second from the top in a company.
“Trashing and pointing out policy differences is two different things. Cruz will go to task on democrat policy and positions but he won’t call them names. He has class.”
And he’s the only one running now who does.
That is why I’m sending him money.
One report mentioned that the audience hissed at Cruz which reminded me of an interesting observation by Jay Nordlinger, which is that only liberals hiss. Jay is a classical music critic and attends lots of shows and has witnessed lots of audiences in lots of situations. I find his observation totally believable.
Well, that decision is all in your mind - Trump said if he doesn’t win - he’ll just go back to doing what he does. He won’t take 2nd spot - no matter how much you wish it.

Really? You think that’s all I have done? You assume I have not sought additional information to corroborate or disprove my opinion?
As for “looking at a picture,” by the time one is Cruz’s age, one has the face one deserves, and by the time one is my age one can see that in photographs.
