Thanks for the Leon Russell song.

FWIW Did you know that Leon Russell went to Tulsa's Will Rogers High School with David Gates (from Bread), Elvin Bishop and future Miss America second runner-up Anita Bryant?

THE CHAMBER MUSIC OF LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN

String Quartet in F, Op. 135

Beethoven had no idea in the summer of 1826 that he had so little time left. As his body slid toward collapse, his last quartet was full of humor and irony in the vein of Haydn and Mozart – a look backward.

It starts with a sonata movement marked “allegretto.” The tipsy opening sets the tone for the entire movement. The second subject is in C Major, which means that Beethoven has gone back to the rule book. There is no repeat of the exposition, and development begins immediately. There is a false recap that leads to yet more development. The real recap is a lot like Haydn, but the coda is long and undeniably Beethoven. It ends without fuss.

The scherzo in second position is marked “vivace” and is based on four instruments trying to find three different downbeats. A errant E-flat blurts in on the off-beats without explanation. It’s an exercise in absurdity that reaches its climax in the central section when the first violin takes up a screeching folk tune while the other instruments play a swirling figure underneath it fifty times. Lou is reaching for the outlandish, and he finds it.

The slow movement, marked “lento assai cantabile e tranquillo,” in D-flat, gave Mahler the thematic material for the finale of his Third Symphony by taking Lou’s theme in a different direction. This is the last set of variations Beethoven ever wrote, and it is a song of noble resignation. Have your tissues handy.

Lou was to label the finale, “The decision made with difficulty. Must it be? It must be!” Was it about a great life changing decision? A metaphysical struggle with cosmic implications? No, it was about the payment of a fee! A longer title would have been, “It must be! Out with your wallet!” It begins “grave ma non troppo tanto” with the question: “Must it be?” It is answered “allegro” decisively: “It must be!” You can even sing along with both question and answer. It ends with a funny restatement in pizzicato of the second theme taken up as the first violin repeats it in the squeaky upper register for the final cadence.

And so Ludwig van Beethoven exits the stage with his hands in his pockets and a weak joke on his lips – an image that would have caused him no end of laughter.

Beethoven: String Quartet in F, Op. 135

And that wraps up the series.

Don’t bet on it, but I hope you don’t. It’s nasty! I hope she recovers quickly and without any residual pain. If she has Calamine lotion or “Tri-Calm” to rub over the blisters, they both seem to sooth the majorly itching/burning. Nothing on this earth really stops all the discomfort, though..

((((gentle hugs to her)))....she’s a trooper for sure!

Oh...and get the shot. God does have a sense of humor. :)

It was from 1959 when dinosaurs walked the earth.

Now that I'm done with Beethoven, I'm debating whether to revive Rockumentary or find another classical theme. The content of YouTube is a limiting factor.
