Franklin Graham Slams Trump on Kim Davis Remarks: 'Forefathers Gave Us Freedom of Religion
Christian Post ^ | 09/08/2015 | Stoyan Zaimov

After GOP Presidential candidate Donald Trump said that Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis should follow "the law of the land," and issue same-sex marriage licenses, evangelical preacher Franklin Graham has argued that what is made into law isn't always right.

"He should know that just because something is made into a law, doesn't make it right. His Scottish Presbyterian ancestors may have been among those who had their heads cut off because they refused to recognize the King of England as head of the church," Graham said in a Facebook message on Monday, referring to Trump.

"They believed that Jesus Christ was the head of the church, not the King of England; and they stood for — and died for —those sincerely held religious beliefs. Our forefathers gave us freedom of religion at a great cost, and that was meant for us to be able to live out our faith in our daily lives, at home and at work," Graham added.

The comments are in response to an interview Trump did with MSNBC's "Morning Joe" co-hosts where he said that he sees "both sides of the picture" when it comes to Davis' case.

The billionaire businessman said that it needs to be recognized that same-sex marriage is "the law of the land," and said that Davis' arrest created a "sticky situation." He suggested that the clerk should have at least allowed her deputies to issue the licenses, which she has refused to do.

"I hate to see her being put in jail. I understand what they're doing. It would be certainly nice if she didn't do it, but other people in her office do it. But from what I understand, she won't allow other people in her office to do it," Trump said.

Davis has appealed U.S. District Judge David Bunning's decision to send her to jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses. The clerk has said that she is acting under "God's authority" in defying the Supreme Court's ruling in June to legalize gay marriage across the U.S.

"God's moral law conflicts with my job duties," Davis told Bunning before her arrest. "You can't be separated from something that's in your heart and your soul."

The judge has said that Davis will be released from prison once she agrees to follow the law and allows the licenses to be issued.

"The court cannot condone the willful disobedience of its lawfully issued order," Bunning said at the hearing. "If you give people the opportunity to choose which orders they follow, that's what potentially causes problems."

Graham has characterized the case as a battle for "religious freedom."

"This ripple effect is exactly what we feared would result from the Supreme Court's disastrous ruling in June. As Americans, our constitution guarantees religious freedom which means we should be able to live out our faith in our daily lives," Graham argued in another Facebook post last week.

"As Kim fights this battle, she is really fighting for religious freedom for all of us," he added.

She has not defied any law. All she has done is not to recognize a ruling from the SC as being the law

Franklin Graham is not someone I put much weight on their words. TV preacher, living off of daddy's dynasty. If Franklin in Kentucky standing vigil for Ms. Davis or is this just a pot shot from afar?

Trump was pragmatic. Where I have a problem is that our nation's clergy has said little, no one rushing to defend Ms. Davis. If anyone is aggrieved and leading this fit, it should be them. But alas, they have filled too many of their ranks with homosexual clergy, have sold out.

Graham is overreacting to Trump rather mild, even-tempered words. If you want a religious warrior, vote Huckabee (and get Jeb). If you want to save America from Third World status, vote Trump.

I’m still waiting for the argument of “public official not following Federal law” used in the Davis situation to be extended to those public officials in sanctuary cities not following federal immigration law.

Let’s start throwing some of those pro-illegal folks in jail for their failure to enforce. Paging Sen. Cruz or Mr. Trump, pick up the white courtesy phone...

Trump isn’t a conservative so he shouldn’t be expected to understand.

The problem with “freedom of religion” is that it is a blank check for false religions. Christianity is the only truth.

I believe Kim Davis is a hero. But, not for the reasons most people do.

Putting public servants in jail for ignoring the law now has a precedent. The POTUS has unleashed a tidal wave of public servants ignoring, or purposely misinterpreting the law, and nothing has been done about it.
Now finally we have a solution. I hope conservative judges will follow it and the constitution with enthusiasm.

.

Rev. Franklin Graham "enjoys" wearing the "spiritual mantle" of being a national-level American Christian leader ... comensurate with an annual salary of $ 800,00 (Good LORD !!!!!)

It HIGH time he START acting like one.

"Christian Kim Davis in Jail" ... is a RED-LINE moment for America's Christians". Period.

ANY Christian Pastor who sees what's happening ... and continues to SIT ON THEIR HANDS is a putrid SPIRITUAL coward. Period.

My philosophy when in Battle ... "Lead, Follow, or get the HELL out of the Way".

I'm not a Mike Huckabee fan, but I admire the HELL out him for his Kim Davis rally.

Frankly, there should be one-thoundsand BUS CARAVANS from ALL ACROSS AMERICA bringing Christians to visit Kim Davis in Jail ...

By the way ... who has the "organization" to do "The Mission" ?

Cowardly Rev. Franklin Graham.

What's he doing. ZERO. NADDA. ZIP.

No Bail was set for Kim Davis. Even Jeffrey Dahmer and the Boston Strangler got bail. Go Figure.

If [sic/]Franklin in Kentucky standing vigil for Ms. Davis or is this just a pot shot from afar?

Speak for yourself.

Are you physically there this day standing with Kim Davis or just throwing self-righteous stones of your own?

Ted Cruz will be there in person.

Will you?

“Graham is overreacting to Trump rather mild, even-tempered words”

Exactly. And Roberts got to the Supreme Court with Graham’s support didn’t he?

Trump had nothing to do with any of this. He is not the one who is going to hell.

"Franklin Graham:.....'Forefathers Gave Us Freedom of Religion"

Sorry Franklin.
Our Forefathers didn't "give" us any rights.

Our rights come from God.
Our Forefathers gave us the framework of a political system that recognizes that fact.

(To paraphrase) "IF we can keep it."

Same sex "marriage" is not "the law of the land."

There is no federal same sex marriage law that was passed by Congress and got signed into law, and there certainly was no such law passed in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Last I looked the judiciary is not authorized to make law from the bench according to the US Constitution. The US Constitution is the Supreme Law of the Land, not a US Supreme Court stepping out of the their Constitutionally defined roles attempting to make law illegitimately and extra-judicially.

In many ways I like what Trump is doing to mix up the ossified political system but he needs to get his facts straight.

Perhaps someday soon Trump will learn what the "Law of the Land" actually is.

FReegards!

Damn shame when you can't defend your guy without insulting the other. Franklin Graham is not a tv evangelist, most of his work is in the field. And, because of his work, millions of children all over the world get Christmas and a message of God with Samaritan's Purse (shoeboxes). He personally goes to disaster sites and works harder than 99% of Americans at his work which is God.

That sounds good on the surface but it won’t work.

Mrs. Davis is acting on the principals of the bible in doing what she is doing. This would preclude her from using deceit and treachery to accomplish her goals. If she was motivated by other principals, she could say, “O.K. I will certify gay marriages.” Then she could turn around and delay them or request large amounts of paper work or require them to jump through all sorts of difficult hoops, or feign incompetence or keep “loosing the paperwork”, etc...

Any liberal who chose not to follow a law would be acting on the principal of ‘the ends justify the means’. This would allow them to take the path of least resistance in accomplishing their goals. They could lie, cheat, hide their intentions and do what ever it took to accomplish their end goals.

George Will, (and I hate to quote him:) “You have a constitutional right to believe what you want, you do NOT have a constitutional right to a government job.”

She made her choice.
