Obama rips GOP candidates as anti-union

Boston (CNN) --- President Barack Obama lambasted Republican presidential candidates Monday, charging the GOP is treating American workers like a hostile force while looking out only for the rich.

Obama delivered a Labor Day speech in Boston, where he traveled to unveil a new executive order he signed forcing companies who contract with the federal government to provide paid sick leave to their employees.

Obama, saying he was relieved to not be on the ballot next November, hit at Republicans who he claimed were espousing policies that would erode the middle class.

"We're starting to hear a lot about middle-class values," he said. "Some folks seem confused about what exactly that means."

Without mentioning him by name, Obama struck at Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker for answering a question about his ISIS strategy earlier this year by saying: "If I can take on 100,000 (union) protesters, I can do the same across the globe."

"He is bragging about how he destroyed collective bargaining rights in his state," Obama said to boos Monday. "And [he] says that busting unions prepares him to fight ISIL. I didn't make that up. That's what he said."

Obama added incredulously, "Really?"

The president told the crowd of nearly 800 union members that organized labor had help secure basic American worker rights like weekends off and a 40-hour workweek.

Time to Rein in Public Sector Unions [Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker did this in 2011]

"...........Conservative Labor Reforms

This transformation of the union movement should make government labor reforms a top conservative priority. Government unions are a powerful institutional force opposed to limiting the size and scope of government. They make top conservative (and politically popular) priorities—from tax relief to school choice—very difficult to enact. Creating them was a mistake that states should rectify.

Several states—such as Virginia and North Carolina—never permitted collective bargaining in government. States that did should return to this example.

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker did this in 2011. He signed legislation eliminating the power of unions to bargain over government benefits and work rules, and strictly limited bargaining over wages. This enabled Walker to transform a $3.6 billion budget shortfall into a surplus and $2 billion in tax cuts. Savings came not just from cutting government pay, but also from operating more efficiently.

Wisconsin school districts, for example, saved tens of millions of dollars through lower health insurance premiums. Previously, the Wisconsin Education Association (WEA) had required school districts to buy health insurance through WEA Trust, a union-backed insurance provider. Once school districts were allowed to shop around, they got lower rates.

Similarly, Wisconsin unions can no longer force their work rules on the state or local governments. The seniority system that forced Milwaukee Public Schools to fire Megan Sampson a week after naming her their “Outstanding First Year Teacher” has now become optional.

Unions threatened to end Scott Walker’s political career for taking them on. They failed miserably. Walker won a union-backed recall election handily. He won his regular re-election bid by almost the exact margin he first won in 2010. Walker’s reforms cost him no political support.

Exit polls in 2014 showed that Walker won the political argument over the role of unions in government. Wisconsin voters view government unions unfavorably by a 52–44 percent margin................"

President Obama Slams GOP Congress In Labor Day Message (VIDEO)

The 2011 Wisconsin protests were a series of demonstrations in the state of Wisconsin in the United States beginning in February involving at its zenith as many as 100,000 protesters opposing the 2011 Wisconsin Act 10, also called the "Wisconsin Budget Repair bill." Subsequently, anti-tax activists and other conservatives, including Tea Party advocates, launched small pockets of counter protests. The protests centered on the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison, with satellite protests also occurring at other municipalities throughout the state. Demonstrations took place at various college campuses, including the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. After the collective bargaining bill was upheld by the Wisconsin Supreme Court on June 14, the number of protesters declined to about 1,000 within a couple days...."

"The protests were a major driving force for recall elections of state senators in 2011 and 2012, the failed recall of Governor Scott Walker in 2012 and a contentious Wisconsin Supreme Court election in 2011."

Unions are an issue of the past. Now they are nothing but deadweight around a business, and a community. look at all the municipalities that are stuck with what the unions have done unfunded liabilities. The reason Obama is attacking Walker is because Walker did somehing in Wisconsin and other states lik Michigan did is change froma Union state o a Right to Work. giving the workers the right to choose whether o be part of a union or not. For Example in Michigan the SEIU wanted to unionize homecare providers to be able to get in on the perceived gravy train of the need for the aging population to have more and more care providers pay union dues for providing homecare. I know in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan it was unrealistic for even the SEIU to even venture into the counties. There was one idiot whom did an he was ran out the county immediately. The local county I live in has seen apopulation decline - and less money is available for county services, bt the county desires o live high off the hog so to speak because the union stewards show up for the various DPW employees, county employees, police union. It has become a joke with the Sheriffs department Union, the local police departments unions and the DPWs unions - all want more for the employees to get their fair share when other issues need to be adressed. Michigan’s biggest problem is roads are virtually a nightmare. The other is employment opportunities virtually non existant. obama probably wants more money for the union stooges to be able to pay off the union voters to get what yet another useless Democrat o the preswidency. Next will be Obama’s Organizing America will endorse yet another Obama crony and stal more union money o promote yet another idealistic idealogy

Growing big government is the socialist way.

Democrats are going to grow "national security" unions ala TSA.

Democrats are going to grow "Obamacare" unions.

Obama and NLRB are growing them in other areas as we speak: Obama, Unions, Trial Bar Take Aim At Franchise Model

So when did the GOP take over the LA City Government?

The Unions today remind me of a Simpsons episode from the 90s with a flashback to around 1900:

Boy: You can't treat the working man this way. One day we'll form a union and get the fair and equitable treatment we deserve. Then we'll go too far, and get corrupt and shiftless and the Japanese will eat us alive!

We are well into the “corrupt and shiftless” phase

Obama is such a joke. The rich have gotten richer under him, the poor have gotten poorer, and the middle class has gotten poorer. He is the most anti-middle class president in the history of the nation.

Of course, most of the GOP will just take it instead of ripping Obama for being anti-job creation.

Just as important for Dems as “union votes” is union dues, funneled directly from employers to Dem coffers.

We recently purchased an automobile. Criterion #1 was was that it not be produced in a plant where the workers were UAW.

I cannot always do so but when I can I avoid union products.

The Mazda CX-5 is a wonderful vehicle

Obama rips GOP candidates as anti-union
50 years ago that might have been a bad thing ripping a union. Nowadays the unions are little more then cash machines for the Democrat Political party.

The fears about getting a “Monday car” or a “Friday car” are valid about UAW-made vehicles (that they won’t be up to par): while unions accomplished a lot for American workers decades ago, those labor reforms have been codified in law - now they are just a racket that protects mediocrity (and in the case of public employees, strangles taxpayers & businesses).

Toyota makes great cars as well; more and more of them are made here (without unions).

I’ve toured Nissan and Toyota plants in TN and IN and the non-union workers appeared to be very happy and glad we were visiting. You can’t make line workers fake that.

I’d believe it, because they aren’t forced to work next to incompetent workers or political officers (shop stewards).

Breaking the public sector unions is job one if we want our country back. They feed the Democrats tax money and subsidies and the Democrats feed them tax money and subsidies. Cut that cord and a lot of positive change follows.

Union dues become donations to the Democratic party.

INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF MACHINISTS (and aerospace workers), 1980 - 1985.

American Federation of Government Employees, 1986 - 1994.

I do agree that public sector unions at any level, are a pariah, and need to be abolished. That includes that quicksand called police unions.
