I haven't heard about any federal efforts. It is the dealership associations who have battled Tesla Motors (The Real Reason Why Dealer Associations Continue to Battle Tesla Motors Has Nothing To Do With Tesla). John O’Dell from Edmunds.com stated why in a two year old Columbus Dispatch article:

“What’s the real fear? That other (automakers) will follow in Tesla’s footsteps.”

That’s the only reason that dealer associations continue to battle. If it were only Tesla to be worried about, the associations would let it go. In the end, the battle really has nothing to do with Tesla. It just so happens that in their attempt to deny Tesla, dealer associations hope to prevent any future automaker from doing it how Tesla does it today. O’Dell adds:

“Dealers have a lot of clout. They have a loud voice and are huge income generators in most states.”

It always ends up to be about money.

“since California has no nuclear plants.”

I think Diablo Canyon is still operating, and I believe we have 5 or so decommissioned plants.

At least one is built smack dab on an earthquake fault (Humboldt Bay) as I understand it.

THAT’S TWO AMERICA DOLLARS????

Sounds like a place I belong.

Parts of the bay area..and particulaly Marin County where I live are beautiful....and filled with all manner of ugly people.

The contrast between the landscape and the people couldnt be more pronounced

No we cannot cut gas use.

We have millions of illegals coming.

They end up driving 15 year old Ford Excursions and Expeditions.

I have some (probably) illegals next door to me, and they leave their 12 pax van idling for hours at at time, doing nothing but burning fuel

Kind of like Stalin decreed 50% grain harvest increase.

To be fair, at least Stalin hired Lysenko to make it happen!

No, they can’t. No matter how high mileage vehicles can get, there will be more vehicles, and more miles driven ... so the same amount or more gasoline being used.

Born and raised in Marin and Sonoma County, lived there for 50+ years. Best weather in the world. So far Texas (McKinney) about 30 miles north of Dallas is like those hot indian summer nights we have in CA, but no fog rolls in to cool things off. Alcimated well so far. Winters will be a new experience.

1. The End of Car Culture: More and more kids are not particularly as enamored with cars as my generation and those before and a little after. So it will be easier to get them to use mass transit or live close to where they work so they can walk/bike, etc.

2. The End of HP Worship: More and more car ads are pointing up the electronic gizmos that the cars have rather than horsepower. Those kids that still want/need autos won't want/need HP as much so they will settle for econoboxes that get better gas mileage ... and are bluetooth enabled.

3. Uber and Self-Driving Cars: More people will go completely without cars and depend on car services like Uber and/or self-driving cars. These cars can be located more centrally leading to reduced mileage. Also, more people will take advantage of delivery services so they won't be driving around to the store, post office, etc.

Yes it would be nice if they finally kicked the illegals out, but that's not going to happen.

And yes the state will collect less gas tax money, so they will shift taxes to a per mile fee which they can apply to all vehicles, even the suckers that bought electric vehicles.

Not really. If you build more freeways there will be more cars overall on the new and older freeways especially in areas of high population growth (by immigration or otherwise).

Man isn’t that the truth. Sonoma County is all set to use an existing rail line to bring their commuters to the Larkspur Ferry Terminal, but Marin is balking. Just the biggest bunch of NIMBY Liberal a$$holes that the world has ever seen.

Down here in the sunny, hot oil patch, guess who buys the muscle pickups or the big SUV's (black with heavy tinted windows)? They could care less about fuel economy.

Ive seen the crews working on the rails near the Novato Dump..

There’s an abandoned roadway thats a great place to walk dogs on the weekend there.

the project will conclude long before the desalinization plants..... ever get underway...maybe

54 mpg?? Oh, GMFB.

When a liberal wants a new BMW/M-B/Monster SUV, you think they will be subject to this and buy one of those roller skate things?

Those Calif libs demand their status symbols, they will not be denied!
