Can California really cut gasoline use by 50 percent?
MercuryNews.com ^ | 09/05/2015 | Paul Rogers

For 50 years, California has led the nation in passing environmental standards to protect its beaches, restore wildlife and reduce smog.

But as the final days of this year's legislative session in Sacramento loom, a controversial bill that would require the state to reduce petroleum use by motor vehicles at least 50 percent by 2030 is causing people in the Capitol and around the state to ask: "Is that even possible?"

Yet lost in the debate are two key facts:

The state will get halfway to that goal even if it does nothing. That's because of federal rules put into place in 2009 by President Barack Obama to double the gas mileage standards for new U.S. vehicles to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025.

Second, the rest of the difference can be made up simply by enforcing -- and in some cases strengthening -- existing laws passed over the last 15 years to boost electric cars, promote mass transit and reduce the amount of carbon in fuels, according to experts who have done the math.

Obama has also repealed the laws of physics and chemistry to do this.

Sure, they will drive the cost of driving up so high that most won’t be able to afford it.

Raise the gas tax in stages until the use of gasoline is reduced by half. It Will work It will work faster than they can even estimate as it drives people out of the state even faster than they are going now. California can put in many thousands of new buses to transport the wetbacks to and from their jobs and to shopping and to the ER etc and will have to do that because the wetbacks won’t be able to afford the gasoline and California doesn’t want them to leave the state.

California allows Tesla dealerships and has from Day 1. You’re thinking of AZ, TX, IA, MI, WV, and MA (as of March 1, 2014).

Gotta figure some way to use libs for fuel. Use ‘em up, and when there’s none left to git in the way go back to gas. Only problem is it’d take about a hunnerd years to use up the supply of libs in California.

Jerry Brown can decree it.

Kind of like Stalin decreed 50% grain harvest increase.

I thought there was a Federal attempt to restrict Tesla to a dealership-only sales venue and Boxer and Feinstein supported it.

“California has no nuclear plants. “

That is not true. We still have several. Check out Diablo Canyon.

If enough people leave.

Precisely, my FRiend.

As California (and U.S. Citizen) residents of the once-golden state leave for relocation in a "Red State", as fast as they possibly can, their carbon footprint will end at the boarder with a neighboring state.

(Of course, so will their taxes, and tough luck to anyone they might have employed.)

Governor Moonbeam is proposing not only to raise the tax on gasoline and diesel, but to index it to inflation. So if we have inflation again, as is very likely, the effect will be for the price of gas to go up and be increased even more as the tax goes up. It won’t take long before no one will be able to afford gasoline to go to work. Voila! Usage cut in half. Maybe even more than half.

“If they jack up the food stamps and everyone who should be working stays home learning to write “poetry” and learning how to play the guitar...’

When you make statements like that you are dissing about 40% of the state including the folks that brought you FR. The political balance in most states is in single digits. Yours may be next for a RAT infestation, then what are you going to say?

Just moved into our new house in TEXAS today! Left CA behind in the liberal dust. Night one we had our next door neighbors invite us over for a bbq of dove breasts stuffed with a jalapenio stuffed with cream cheese and the whole thing wrapped in bacon. There was a few beers in attendance as well. Now I have a deer and bird hunting area. Some friendly folks here. Yeah, it was a good move! Oh Yeah, filled up the truck for $2.05 a gallon this afternoon.

It we build more freeways that would create less time stuck in traffic wasting gas. All the Dems could ride buses.
