US warns Russia against more aid to Assad amid new violence

BEIRUT (AP) — Anti-government violence erupted Saturday in a southern Syrian province that had largely stayed on the sidelines of the country's civil war. Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports suggesting that Russia was planning to expand its military support for Syrian President Bashar Assad prompted a warning from the U.S. that such actions could lead to a confrontation with coalition forces.

The violence in Sweida province, a stronghold of the Druze minority sect, followed the killing of a prominent cleric in rare explosions Friday that claimed the lives of at least 25 others, activists and pro-government media said. Rioters holding the government responsible for the cleric's death destroyed the statue of late Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad and besieged security offices, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and other activist groups said.

In Washington, the State Department issued a statement after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry called Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to express concern over unconfirmed reports "suggesting an imminent enhanced Russian military build-up" in Syria.

While I am convinced Russia has nothing but their won interests in mind here, and would like nothing more than than to see the destruction of America, I also convinced we are on the wrong side.

No good can ever come from supporting Jihadis. Even if they are fighting our enemies.

Well, nothing, of course.

That's why I doubt Putin has even heard the warning yet. His aides don't want to interrupt happy hour.

Syria and Russia have been allies for over 50 years.

You stole the question right off of my keyboard - yet another worthless Red Line pronouncement? A strongly worded Tweet on Twitter saying Putin has acted stupidly? Selfies of Obamster & Kerry with frowny faces?

Currently in Syria the primary players in the game are Assad, Isis and Al Nusra. There are no “moderate” rebels left. The fifty that were left and Mr Obama spent a half billion training to make it look like he was doing something got killed as soon as they were let loose in the field or ran away.

Of the three entities currently fighting, one terrorizes Israel and certain Middle East Sunnis but poses no direct threat to the US and the other two want to terrorize Israel, Middle East Shia, non islamists and the US and the West. I think I will choose door number one on this one.Looks like Mr Obama is going with doors 2 and 3.

I wish the place would stabilize so that we wouldn’t be overrun with immigrants. Contain it or we will have Syria world wide.

"I wish the place would stabilize so that we wouldn’t be overrun with immigrants."

Russia and Assad are the shortest path to stability.

We should just look the other way.

“Russia = “We’re sooooo scared ...””

I just imagine a President Trump will boost our energy production, offer it to our allies, and drive Putin, the Chinks, and the ME into financial ruin! That’s the weapon to employ. All these bastards are teetering on the brink of financial disaster right now.We could be in the driver’s seat today if it weren’t for the crooked, inept half-breed, Commie, illegal alien we have in the White Hut.

Russia and Assad are the shortest path to stability.

We should just look the other way.

Well, Putin certainly didn’t like the fact that Ukraine overthrew his toadie. He may have take the Crimea and be in the process of taking back Eastern Ukraine, but Putin would much preferred that it never happened at all.
