Pope Francis’ chair for MSG Mass revealed
NYPost ^ | September 2, 2015 | By Matthew Abrahams and Yaron Steinbuch

A simple oak chair built by immigrant laborers and devoid of the ornate trappings of power was unveiled Wednesday as the one Pope Francis will use later this month when he leads Mass at Madison Square Garden.

“Look at that, huh?” a smiling Cardinal Timothy Dolan said, lauding its simple design for reflecting the unpretentious man-of-the-people pontiff’s character.

“I’m not going to sit in it because that would be bad luck,” Dolan quipped.

The chair was built by day laborers from the Don Bosco Workers charity in Port Chester, rather than by expert craftsmen, something that was very important to the pope, Dolan said.

“He wanted something very simple. He wanted something wooden. He didn’t want any designs. So we’re very grateful to the workers and very proud of what that represents,” he said. ...

So now the Pope has to have a specially made chair that has to be made by day laborers. This unpretentious man is very pretentious.

Oh! I thought it was something about mono-sodium-glutamate. The pope seems to be delving into a lot of subjects that he needs to stay out of.

It's a shame that a prince of the Church jokes about "bad luck". May a leprechaun steal all the proceeds from Dolan's sale of Catholic churches.

This pope is proud to make a point of his "humility".

It's interesting to learn a little about this custom. The chair represents the teaching authority (as when Jesus spoke of the "seat of Moses") and it is a matter of great local satisfaction to be able to make this chair for the pope, or even for the bishop or a high civic or academic figure ("chair of the philosophy department": many Universities symbolize this literally).

The presider at Mass always has a particularly large or ornate chair. Even out little bitty Day Chapel used for daily Mass has chairs for the presider and concelebrants or deacons, very much like these:

The particular chair made by these immigrant laborers is apparently a good deal smaller, and less elaborate, than many have been in the past.

This has been the custom forever, it's not just a matter of "Pope Francis Rock Star". Most people would know this.

That kind of chair does muffle the sound pretty good though.

Would have been nice if he had hired a couple of the nearly 93,000,000 unemployed American citizens I’m sure among that number is a schlub who worked his entire life, followed the laws and paid his taxes as a citizen.

Who am I kidding. The citizen is just another patsy.

I won’t be attending the mass. I don’t speak Spanish.

I don' speak Latin, either, but it would have been good to have a Latin Mass.

That way it wouldn't be "their" language... or "my" language... but "OUR" language.

Exactly. I’m tired of hearing how humble he is.

It would have been a lot cheaper to go get a lawn chair from the local Walmart and donate that money to the poor.

This has been the custom forever, it's not just a matter of "Pope Francis Rock Star". Most people would know this.

If that's the case, most people are ignorant of the Catholic Church's history.
