Jeb Bush: The man who killed Trump's casino dreams
cnn.com ^ | September 2, 2015 | Jeremy Diamond

Donald Trump openly boasts that he donates to politicians so he can exact favors from them after they reach office.

He did so for Jeb Bush in 1998, holding a high-dollar fundraiser for the gubernatorial candidate in Trump Tower and shelling out $50,000 to the Florida Republican Party. But when Bush took office in 1999, Trump didn't get the political help he needed to make his casino dreams a reality in the Sunshine State.

Ted won't make it to the end of the primary...

Aren't we still a long way from this thing being over? Especially with Cruz having the financial wherewithal to stay in it until the end.

To stop the train wreck that our Country is headed into, monikers like conservative and liberal are becoming less and less important...Both factions are taking us into the abyss... I'm going to support someone who is 'wrapped in the flag'...

YOU, sir, understand things.

There ARE two factions: Elitists and the Populace.

Think: Hunger Games.

...but what happens when the man is elected and starts doing things his ego persuades him to do that are utterly repugnant to conservative constitutional values?

The tip over into fascism has occurred already. Everyone running will govern that way. Trump's our Peron. The rest of them are rent boys and girls. The disintegration might as well be humorous.

One difference between Trump and the Washington crowd, IMO: Trump wants to be liked and supported by the people, as opposed to the politicians.

He appears to enjoy “bullying” pols into doing what he wants.

I am enjoying watching him tie the GOPe into knots, even though I would prefer other candidates. But the enemy of my oppressor can absolutely be an ally, especially this far out from the actual election.

:.........he has needed favors and cooperation and he has demonstrated that he was willing to go to corrupt lengths to get it.”..........

And the news media is saying that Trump is not a politician? The opening statement quoted above tells me he is INDEED an experienced politician, its what they do.

What I find interesting is that Bush just came off a bank cartel position at 1.3 million a year and said banks thrive because of donations and payoffs to the politicians who are up there running for President...They are getting those payoffs RIGHT NOW...We don't seem to see Bush opening his yap about it...

Sounds like Bush is your man then...He claims to be a conservative like you...

Oh, horse hockey! Let's do without those kinds of insults.

Well what the heck is a conservative then??? Every politician running claims to be a conservative...

Is a conservative pro amnesty or against it???
Is a conservative pro unfair trade with Europe and China???
Is a conservative in support of letting Iran have nuclear weapons or no???
Is a conservative in support of the 'New World Order'???

It seems to me we need a third designation...

A conservative would say "no" to all those things.

As would you, I suspect.

And as would I.

I have always enjoyed and respected your opinions.

I would agree on your sentiments here as well.

Cruz would (should) be that person BUT is it possible? For awhile there, it was Palin who was going to lead us to salvation. Turns out she didn’t have it.

When I look back on the past 7 years that the current prez has been in office and then compare his pedigree and accomplishments prior to becoming president to Trump’s, I have no problem supporting Trump as the alternative candidate to Cruz.

This country has bottomed out from a societal, economic and military perspective and is a joke to the international community.

What is there to lose at this point?

is it possible?

My guess is no better than yours but I say we soldier on until the matter is decided.

Thank you for the kind words.

BTW, Trump says no to all those things...

I know. But he waffles.

He says he wants all the "terrific" illegals to return...

He says funding the "other part" of Planned Parenthood is OK...

My impression is that Trump is given to the strong statement at the outset, then starts to back off when there is any criticism. It suggests to me that his positions sometimes aren't well thought out.

If he's the nominee, I'll support him. Don't worry about that! But I'm not sold yet...

“Cruz has stood up in the Senate all night long virtually alone against the Republican establishment and the media to defend us against tyranny. What has Donald Trump actually done except fund ethical “corruption” and profit from it?”

I like Cruz. He’s polling so low, he’s in danger of becoming irrelevant. So now what? I do have an issue with Cruz for voting for “pre-ratification” of the Iran deal - he DIDN’T stand up for tyranny there - and contributed to this extra-Constitutional nonsense, that endangers America.

So we’ve got conflicts. So what?

“I fail to see how Donald Trump reflects conservative values by virtue of his biography or by virtue of his public statements. “

I’m not holding him out as a paragon of conservatism. Then again, there aren’t any in GOP leadership and no GOP leadership on conservative issues. Trump fights back, and he supports the single issue (Illegal immigration) that I think is most important. I don’t care if Trumps position on illegal immigration is “conservative” or not. I’m pretty sure all the supposed “conservatives” are “nuanced” on illegal immigration. They are wrong, Trump is right, and if I get an opportunity to vote for him in the primaries, I will, and if he keeps his stated position, I’ll vote for him for President - WHATEVER party he runs under.

Do you understand? “conservatives” are all “nuanced” on a whole host of issues. I don’t care. I’m voting for the SINGLE issue I think is important. That he approximates conservatism on other issues is fine, but I don’t care. There is no issue that I am aware that his position makes him an abhorrent candidate to vote for.

“Because it is too early for the polls to be dispositive”

BS. You find them dispositive enough to reject him. Why reject him? If he’s the candidate, I’ll vote for him. He’s in the lead, so it’s not a stretch to assume he COULD be the GOP candidate. At this point, Cruz is so far behind, it isn’t a stretch to question whether he’ll be a factor. If Cruz is the nominee, I’ll vote for him - but I’d like it better if his position on illegal immigration were closer to Trumps.

“I have emphasized the words, “right now” because it is not “right now” that we are picking a viable candidate.”

Yeah, Lindsay Graham isn’t viable right now either. Neither is Jim Gilmore, or George Pataki. Those guys are his polling peers right now.

Trump is in the lead. It’s not everything at this point, but it’s not nothing either, as you seem to suggest.

“That’s not an answer to what I asked. “ I knew what you meant, was merely being provocative - but my point is also valid.

You want the country run like a “productive” business, not the current “political” business. I got it, and I agree. What the hell, we may as well try that, right?

“I am willing to be convinced. “

I’m not the guy to convince you. I’m a single issue voter. Illegal immigration is destroying everything this country is that a conservative would vote for.

Trump hasn’t articulated anything abhorrent to me. Yeah, after illegal immigration is done, I’ll have a lot of opinions on what is next. Let us get to having that problem, rather than having every problem INCLUDING illegal immigration like we have now.

That’s just me. You have no assurance or guarantee from any candidate “conservative” or not. In fact, you have a track record of promises of “conservative” things, and then not implementing “conservative” things.

Illegal Immigration. That’s the issue I want addressed and Trump does that better than anyone. Will he do it? I don’t know - but I am certain none of the other candidates will, including Cruz.

After all this back and forth let me shock you, I agree with you there is only one issue: immigration.

If immigration continues, even without amnesty, the Republicans will not win another election in my lifetime and probably for a whole generation after that. If that is because the Democrats, facilitated often by the courts, are jiggering the election laws and furnishing illegal immigrants with drivers licenses with which they will gain entry to the polls. That is going on without amnesty, with amnesty there simply is no hope.

No hope for the country, not just for a conservative country but no hope for a nation that resembles a nation in which I grew up or a nation which is not simply absorbed into a polyglot, amorphous global village very likely severely regimented and much poorer. We might become Muslim, we might become the victims of the Chinese, we might find ourselves regimented by the environmentalists, or a new force might emerge but one thing is clear, an America faithful to the Bill of Rights and to its constitution will simply not survive. Paragraph Without a check on immigration there can be no effective national defense, no hope of bringing the budget under control to avoid a calamity, no national consensus to oppose radical Islam or aggressive Chinese expansionism. There will be no sense of nation.

I give Trump the edge on immigration over Ted Cruz, but just a small edge because Trump can't be trusted, Trump is not motivated by conservative values, he will not seek to curb immigration to protect conservatism or even to protect the Constitution, he will do it because he thinks it makes economic sense. If we have to choose between the two, I believe Cruz will fight to protect the Constitution. But Cruz is not right on the visas and he has not been strong enough on deportation.

I do not fault people for choosing Trump for his stance on immigration, I do fault conservatives who are willfully blind to the man's failings.

Probably not enough difference between us to have a good argument then.

You can’t trust any of ‘em. Nor should anyone.

As for Ted, You can stack all the H1B info you like.

I wasn't talking about H1B1, I was talking about mass legalization of illegals, his subterfuge and his subterfuge regarding his open borders promoting wife, who by the way also works for Goldman Sachs. There's a very big difference.

It does not make a dent by comparison to the swaths of liberalism Trump has in his history. NOT - A DENT.

Sure does, because no matter what Trump has held in the past, by holding the right position on immigration in the face of all adversity, Trump stands tall as the most conservative and reliable candidate in the race. Every other issue pales in comparison to the Illegal Immigration issue.

I never said TC was perfect. He is however far more conservative as his record shows in a direct comparison.

Not only is Cruz not perfect, he is not forthright in his positions. It's the latter that scares me more than the former. I'm not looking for a perfect candidate. I'm looking for an honest candidate who is going to stand up to La Raza.
