DOVER — More than 150 people visited David and Lydia Scott’s farm off Back Road in Dover on a misty, perfect Sunday morning, to meet Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz.
Although the majority were New Hampshire residents, folks like Conrad Baldini made the trek from Salem, Massachusetts. “He is really dynamic,” explained Baldini. “I really look forward to seeing and hearing him in person.”
If elected president, Cruz said he would tackle the IRS, illegal immigration, education and the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as ObamaCare.
“When I tell you I am going to do something, I’m going to do exactly what I said,” Cruz told supporters.
The Scotts had a large white tent set up on their bucolic property which goes back to more than 300 years. The tent abutted their diverse fruit farm which, according to David, “feeds us all winter long.”
Conservative Scott, a longtime community activist, explained that he met Ted several months ago and was so impressed with the senator from Texas, that he asked if he would consider speaking in Dover.
“He graciously accepted my invitation,” said David, “and I immediately started making plans and inviting some friends to give them an opportunity to get to know him.”
Cruz has visited the Granite State several times and the people were well known to him, one of whom was former U.S. Senator from New Hampshire Bob Smith.
“He is so personable,” said Smith. “One of the things I like most about him is that he really listens, that is important and something you don’t see with a lot of candidates.”
Dressed in tan slacks, polished cowboy boots and an open collar shirt, Cruz looked and acted comfortable with the surroundings. He quickly moved to the nearby tent which was filled to capacity with seated guests, and ringed on the outside by many standees.
Greeting all, with microphone in hand, for more than 30 minutes, Senator Cruz regaled the audience with his political philosophies and what things he would do upon election.
His sense of humor and zeal were evident as he alternately had those in attendance laughing uproariously or applauding at his pointed comments about the failings of the present administration.
He was not shy about his admiration of former President Ronald Reagan’s politics, and gave his admonition to his supporters that one group of potential Cruz voters could be the so called “Reagan Democrats.”
Cruz told the crowd what he would immediately do if voted president.
“One of the first things I am going to do when I become president is abolish the IRS,” he said, adding he would also “completely suspend ObamaCare.”
He also commented on the education system.
“One of the first thing I am going to do when I take office is abolish the Department of Education. Common Core ends today,” he said.
Cruz commented that if they could entice just a portion of the group at the campaign stop, many of whom did not vote in the past presidential election, it would be a boon to his campaign. He likened the tenor of the country today as similar to the time just before Reagan with Russia and Iran the most dangerous countries then and now.
After a spirited question and answer period, the candidate bade farewell, leaving the many to chat among themselves about their impressions of first time senator.
Pat Miller of Merrimack, described Cruz: “I am a big Cruz fan,” and making a New Hampshire comparison said, “He’s right out of the Bob Smith mode, his words and message are the same.”
Sean and Danielle Maxwell, of Rye, came to the event with Danielle commenting that Senator Cruz was “a wonderful breath of fresh air.”
Rollinsford State Rep. Jodi Lavoie-Carnes, R-Rollinsford, was joined by her husband, Scott, and their 6-year-old twins Zachary and Zoe.
Former Somersworth Mayor Matt Spencer was in attendance as were current Dover Mayor Karen Weston and Dover City Councilor Catherine Cheney, as was Dover Matt Mayberry.
Well known Doverites Rick and Mary Hebbard were present as well. When asked her opinion of Ted Cruz, Mary said succinctly: “He’s the one.”

Ted is not a recent convert to the party. I really detest someone “evolving” and then deciding that they should run for President.
That includes Dr. Carson who was a Democrat until earlier this year I believe.

Ben Carson was a Democrat before becoming a Republican during the Reagan administration, only to switch to an Independent during the Clinton years. He switched back to Republican in Nov 2014.
I am not an avid supporter of Carson but would like the record straight. I think he is too soft spoken and too green to be President. Look what happened to the last one with no experience.
For a moment there, I read Dover as Denver and got all excited.
