Russian jets take to Syrian skies to combat IS

Russia begins military intervention against IS in Syria; IS closes in on Damascus

Russian fighter pilots, jets and helicopters will begin arriving in Syria in the coming days to join in the offensive against the Islamic State (IS) and rebel-aligned targets within the failing state Israeli news site Ynet News reported Monday.

According to Western diplomats, Russian expeditionary forces have already arrived in Syria to set up camp in an Assad-controlled airbase near Damascus, and will operate as a Russian forward operating base.

Thousands of Russian military personnel are set to arrive in Syria over the coming weeks, including instructors, advisors, logistics personnel, technical personnel, members of the aerial protection division, and the pilots who will operate the aircraft said Ynet.

While the exact make-up the expeditionary force is unconfirmed, past reports had stated that Russia was in talks to sell Syria a package of MiG-29 fighter jets, and Yak-130 trainer jets which can also operate as attack aircraft. The new presence of Russian pilots operating combat missions over Syria is expected to drastically challenge the dynamics of the region.

According to Ynet the Russians main goal is combating IS and preserving Assad's rule. They do not have offensive intentions towards Israel or other sovereign states in the area however, their presence will challenge the Israeli Air Force's previous freedom of operation in Middle East airspace.

Russia has been in it for quite a while, like stopping Obama from attacking Syria for allegedly using chemical weapons.

A resounding success for Putin. Let's hope he can make a big difference on the world stage again.

I’m not hoping Putin can do anything but disappear. Same for his helpers at home and abroad. But I know that Russia is a main player in the last days before the establishment of God’s kingdom on earth.

Talk about disappearing, besides you and ETL, there is an absence of the usual Putin bashers on this thread.

Maybe they are finally starting to see the light.

from my reply #19:

It may be that the Hillary Clinton/Barack Obama policy has brought us to this place but we also ought not to forget that the beginning of the chain of consequences began with our invasion of Iraq.

Because he's not spreading Communism, only asking for survival and a fair shake for Russia.

Russia has changed remarkably for the better in the last 30 years, and we should appreciate that.

survival and a fair shake

So you don't think Russia's government wants to dominate the Middle East politically, militarily, and economically? You believe that was just because of Soviet-style communism and is no longer true? What about Israel? Would Russia defend Israel against aggression by Muslim countries?

I was warning about this before it happened. Search the FR archives.

The Sunni/Shiite distinction is overdrawn

Trying to remember how many Shia attacks inside the USA happened? Maybe a few - can't remember any. Sunni attacks seem almost constant since the first WTC bombing and before that even.

Again, this not me being pro-Shia - but the most extreme Shia regime - Iran - treats her Christians way better than the Sunni version which seems to enslave and behead them. So, no, I don't agree with you assessment they are similar - even if they both do suck.

But ..... Jesus is coming back, and we'd all better repent. Plenty of us here on FR will tell you this.

I only pointed out the Gog/Magog prediction/prophesy is an interpretation used by some Christians. It is not a Lutheran belief, for example, etc.

You mean ETL did this before? I assume ETL thinks this makes Russia look good somehow and he needs to pre-emptive troll? I don’t know why he called me comrade or whatever.

My two cents, the Russians are not capable of dominating the Middle East. I think they are looking for spheres of influence and stability. The USA has shown it is OK with chaotic destruction as it tries to democratize the middle east. Other nations favor stability and a strong hand to keep it that way. The USA used to feel that way also - we did not prop up Mubarak's Egypt to push democracy all these decades.

Also, the USA has no defense treaty with Israel so I don't know if the USA would rush to Israel's defense with our own troops. I would want it to and maybe Israel should be in NATO (fat chance) but Israelis probably feel they can't totally rely on the USA for their defense.
