States with tough gun laws have fewer shooting deaths: study

The harder states make it to get guns — like New York — the fewer people die because of them, a new analysis of firearm restrictions shows.

New York State, with its relatively strict laws — restrictions that are even tougher in the five boroughs — had 4.2 gun deaths per capita in 2013, the third-fewest number of gun-related deaths nationwide, according to the National Journal’s study released Monday.

It examined gun-related deaths of all types — from murders to suicides and accidental shootings — in the year 2013 and found “while it’s certainly true that a number of factors contribute to the high rates of gun violence in the U.S., a comparison of state laws versus rates of shooting deaths does show a correlation.”

Hawaii had the lowest number of gun-linked deaths — 2.5 per 100,000 people — in the country in 2013, said the National Journal, a public policy magazine and website.

The Aloha State also places serious restrictions on gun buyers and owners: Permits are required to purchase handguns, as are background checks and a 14-day waiting period. In Hawaii, it is also relatively difficult to get either a concealed- or open-carry permit, according to the study.

The reverse of all that is generally true of Alaska, which had the highest rate of gun deaths: 19.8 per 100,000 people in 2013. Alaska doesn’t require permits or background checks to buy or carry guns, and there is no waiting period to obtain a firearm.

That same year in Virginia, where gun laws are less restrictive — and where TV news reporter Alison Parker and videographer Adam Ward were gunned down while live on air by a deranged ex-colleague last week — there were 10.2 gun deaths per capita, making it the state with the 19th-fewest gun-related deaths

It was really relevant to point that out, wasn't it? No bias there.

They are counting suicides in these calculations, which skews the results tremendously.

In addition, those killed in the act of committing crimes are included as well.

Total horseshit. John Lott studied this extensively, scientifically and his peer reviewed findings of “more guns, less crime” has never been refuted by any reputable source. This crap is just more lies. The old lies didn’t work too well, so lets try new ones and see if they stick.

Typically. areas with fewer guns have a much higher violent crime rate overall. In addition, does the study consider the number of defensive gun uses? Are those numbers higher or lower than other areas? Ignoring that side of things makes the study immediately flawed because it only shows one side of the equation and is just a subset of the entire situation.

Gun related crime/murders are in direct proportion to the overall Negro population of the state.

Liberals know this but that is not relevant to their goals. Actually is is advantageous to them to have more shootings and crime. It serves to keep the middle calls off balance and serves to produce excuses for more administrative laws and greater bureaucratic control of the population.

Does that indicate a need for more blacks control?

That would depopulate a place after a while, don’t you think?

To me a reputable report of the “report” would include a list of all the states and a large set of cities as well.

A reputable study would factor in the demographics, note the disproportionate number of black underclass homicides, and separate things out by demographics.

I notice they didn't mention Vermont, a state which had NO license needed to carry, plus low homicide rates.

Lots of rational, analytical comments here. Kudos.

All this misses the point - the purpose of this “study” is to provide talking points to condition the uninterested in supporting (or at least acquiescing in) more gun control.

When your first reaction is a reasoned, “Nobody would believe such crap,” you are wrong. Remember, “well, they need to do SOMETHING” has unusual power over the uninformed, misinformed, and incapable of becoming informed masses.

How are their rates of people getting whacked with machetes?

Like Connecticut’s tough gun law stopped a massacre in 2012 of school children and their teachers. And we all know that Chicago’s tough guns laws have eliminated shooting deaths in that city.

I call shenanigans on this study.

Well, first we need to know which states have strict machete control laws.

This is useless without the counts of other causes of death, like knifing and bludgeoning, for instance.

That's a lot of gun deaths. I bet they were decimated to the last man!
