California sinking faster than thought, aquifers could permanently shrink

California is sinking even faster than scientists had thought, new NASA satellite imagery shows. Some areas of the Golden State are sinking more than 2 inches per month, the imagery reveals. Though the sinking, called subsidence, has long been a problem in California, the rate is accelerating because the state's extreme drought is fueling voracious groundwater pumping.

"Because of increased pumping, groundwater levels are reaching record lows — up to 100 feet (30 meters) lower than previous records," Mark Cowin, director of California's Department of Water Resources, said in a statement. "As extensive groundwater pumping continues, the land is sinking more rapidly, and this puts nearby infrastructure at greater risk of costly damage."

What's more, this furious groundwater pumping could have long-term consequences. If the land shrinks too much, and for too long, it can permanently lose its ability to store groundwater, the researchers said. The state's sinking isn't new: California has long suffered from subsidence, and some parts are now a few dozen feet lower than they were in 1925, according to the U.S. Geological Survey...

Leviticus 26: 18 And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins. 19 And I will break the pride of your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass: 20 And your strength shall be spent in vain: for your land shall not yield her increase, neither shall the trees of the land yield their fruits.

Lamentations 5:1 Remember, O LORD, what is come upon us: consider, and behold our reproach. 2 Our inheritance is turned to strangers, our houses to aliens. 3 We are orphans and fatherless *, our mothers are as widows. 4 We have drunken our water for money; our wood is sold * unto us.

California is the bread basket of the United States. We are headed for massive food inflation if California does not come out of this drought...

One side effect of arrogance is bad planning. When California had it good, there was plenty of time to have gotten desalinization plants in place.

Nonetheless, the Lord does not take any joy in vengeance for vengeance’ sake. If people will even now yield to the Lord and His love and care and wisdom, the worst may yet be averted or at least shortened in duration.

California got that way because of its temporary advantages. Other regions could serve as bread baskets too.

Ancient Israel might have felt the same way for a while coming off of the wealth amassed by Solomon. “Look, we’re stinking rich, we don’t lack a thing, so God can just buzz off.”

Two inches a month? Wow, that's incredible. San Jose, CA had a serious subsidence problem in the late 1800s through the mid 1960s when ground water recharging was resumed. The land did not bounce back as the article points out. Land in San Jose dropped eight feet!

Our worst-ever rate was 8 inches per year, only one-third of the current worst rate. This is bad.

The contour lines on this map of the Santa Clara basin mark equal amounts of land subsidence for the period 1933 to 1967, measured in feet. Additional subsidence occurred before 1934, so the contours only show a portion of the total change. Contours from Poland and Ireland, USGS Professional Paper 497-F (1988)

What California needs to do is add another 3 million illegals into the state.

That should take care of things.

I’ve already noticed a sudden lack of quality and variety at the grocery store produce section...I assume its drought related. I view California as a harbinger of what the entire nation’s future will be: The urban areas have asserted their influence over the rural areas, and control the political, economic, and moral ‘tone’. Its too bad.

If Globull Warming "scientists" can produce studies showing warming causes more polar ice, then it should be a snap to establish that the extra weight would reduce subsidence. Prolly use the same "researchers."

The map is interesting showing the subsistence is along the general valley

One wonders if the valley is not the result of long term subsistence

Then there is the south end where the contour lines nearly merge. that means a sharp gradient but I can’t interpret what means. Something important seems to be in process in that region

Take a look at the San Andres fault line in that area. I'd post a pic, but I'm at work.
