As of today, it has been a record 118 months since the last major hurricane struck the continental United States, according to records kept by the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Hurricane Research Division, which list all hurricanes to strike the U.S. mainland going back to 1851

A major hurricane is Category 3 or higher hurrucine. The last one to strike the continental U.S. was Hurricane Wilma, which made landfall in Florida on Oct. 24, 2005.

Global warming said we would have more Katrinas, and then it said we would have less.

All hail our new god, Global Warming, it controls all.

hurricane Sandy isn’t on the list? The liberals said Sandy was the clear evidence of more powerful storms due to global warming.

Or is the impact of Sandy magnified because it hit a liberal media bastion such as New York City???

Somehow, this is all Bush’s fault.

And of course, Steve Dunham said he’d pretty much stop the rise of the oceans.

So.........

Sandy was a huge tropical depression, but only a category 1 hurricane.

The size of the storm led to high storm surges in an area which was both densely populated and frankly, vulnerable to the sort of flood damage that comes with high waves and a storm surge. So the economic destruction was huge, but in terms of storm intensity, Sandy was relatively mild.

I will grant that a Cat 1 storm can be formidable in and of itself, (I have been through a couple), but the intensity is still far short of a Cat4 or Cat5 hurricane.

Hurricane Sandy destroyed my 88-yr-old Mother's house on the Jersey shore, wiping out a lifetime of possessions and memories, and ruining the retirement plans that she and my step-Dad had made and saved up for. Years of haggling with insurance and NJ State agencies to try to recover something at age 90.

Sandy not a major hurricane, eh? NOAA can bite my a$$.

I think the residents of Houston and Galveston who were slammed by Hurricane Ike in 2008 might take issue with this. I know Ike was officially a Cat 2 but weakened into a 2 and had the storm surge of a 3.

I guess your definition of a major storm depends on whether it hits your area or another location. Ike was a very major storm if you happened to live on the Bolivar Peninsula or Galveston.

Look, I'm not going to argue. I understand what you're saying, and yes, in terms of wind velocity at US landfall, Sandy was Category 1, which is obviously not "major" when you consider the wind velocity of a Cat4 or Cat5 storm.

I'm only pointing out that "major" is a matter of your units of measure. Consider this as an alternate metric for "major". This is from Wikipedia:

Hurricane Sandy was the deadliest and most destructive hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, and the second-costliest hurricane in United States history... While it was a Category 2 storm off the coast of the Northeastern United States, the storm became the largest Atlantic hurricane on record (as measured by diameter, with winds spanning 1,100 miles (1,800 km)). Estimates as of May 2013 assessed damage to have been over $68 billion (2013 USD), a total surpassed only by Hurricane Katrina. At least 233 people were killed along the path of the storm in eight countries.
Sandy was clearly "major" in size, and in cost (in dollars, and in human lives). And I can tell you from personal experience that it had a devastating effect on a good part of the Eastern US seaboard.

So we agree that wind velocity at landfall is important, but IMO it is not the only important unit of measure. NOAA can still kiss my a$$.

In Tokyo, they’re building new tunnels to absorb the storm surge from typhoons. The problem is that in densely populated cities, there’s nowhere for water to go, and you don’t have much of soil to absorb water, especially in New York City.

She wasn’t a hurricane. You still hear the accurate description of “Super Storm Sandy”...
