Concussions in the NFL: How Worried are You?

For football fans everywhere, the NFL’s concussion crisis has raised some uncomfortable questions about what it means to love a sport that’s been shown to cause lasting harm to its players. The league’s ratings continue to enjoy near-record highs, yet at the same time, scientific research increasingly suggests that football can lead to a wide range of long-term brain conditions.

In one recent poll, a majority of Americans said they expect football to be just as popular in 20 years, but 50 percent said they would not want their son to play the game. Joining the chorus of those worried about children playing football is Mike Ditka, the legendary coach of the 1985 Super Bowl champion Chicago Bears, who in an interview this month on HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel said, “I think the risk is worse than the reward. I really do.”

Question: How worried about concussions am I?

Answer: I have not lost a moments sleep or one meal.

Comment: I think cognitive problems among most NFL players long antedated their playing in the NFL.

I don’t worry about other people’s concussions, especially when they get paid millions of dollars to sustain them and do it of their own free will.

It's like rock music. I surfeited myself on the crap when I was young, and by the time I reached the age of 30 I couldn't stand it, so moved on to something better.

BS. This phony concussion issue is nothing more than an effort to eliminate football as we know it. When they include all the knee and head injuries from soccer, then I’ll listen to what they have to say.

American football is a hitting sport. A violent sport. It is the most competitive sport there is and attracts the most competitive men. It’s a man’s game. Which is why the NWO crowd needs to get rid of it.

Feminazi’s and homosexuals can go p!$$ up a rope. Leave football alone.

Much worse, I’m sure. But we don’t see parents signing up for their kids to enroll in those sports.

There are physical risks playing pro sports for years and years.

Either get over it and ccept it, insure against it, or find other work. Nobody holds a gun to your head to play sports against your will.

Football is an inherently violent game. Soccer is accessible for everyone and you don't have to lose your mind playing the game.

Couldn’t stand soccer from the moment they tried to foist it off on us in the 60s, in high school P.E. G what a boring game.

Baseball is supposed to be a boring game. By comparison there are countless possibilities on each and every pitch to the plate.

In Soccer, it’s this perpetual running to and fro. Big whoop.

I realize the guys are in great shape, and some of the things they do with the ball are incredible. Not enough.

If you actually look at the numbers, soccer has a high concussion rate. Womens gymnastics is right up there with football in terms of concussion rates. Womens ice hockey has the highest rate of concussion.

In comparing soccer and football, most football is played at the high school level. Only a small percentage of players are able to continue playing at the college level. For those whose career ended at the high school level, there are no adult community tackle football leagues to speak of.

For the vast majority of football players, concussion risk ends with high school.

Organized soccer on the other hand is played much later in life. By the time a community adult soccer league player who never played in college is 30, he/she will have greatly exceeded the concussion exposure of the football player who had no choice but to stop playing at the high school level.

The Left loves soccer because it is played all over the world. The left also hates football because it is so popular in America. Feminists hate football because no one is interested in watching women play football unless the players are wearing lingerie.

Life is full of risks. Only a minuscule number of former football players would not play if they were given an opportunity for a do-over in life.

I don’t think it’s even the diagnosed concussions, it’s just the repeated moderate jarring of the brain that is inevitable playing from all levels into the pro level. Having an actual concussion while then getting moderate blows to brain is supposed to be really bad, but it’s still not good even without the actual concussion. And it doesn’t even have to be blows directly to the head, any abrupt force to the body that jars the brain is bad, like tackling.
