State, municipal email used to register for Ashley Madison cheatsite

The online world has been rocked this week by news that a group of hackers obtained the names of registrants on Ashley Madison, a website where people can find partners for extramarital affairs.

Needless to say this probably has users of the site more than a little bit worried. The information reportedly lives on the “dark web,” a hard-to-find corner of the internet. The company has gotten some sites to take the data down, but lookup services, based on third parties rather than the actual hacking, remain.

In a statement, the cheating site’s owner, Avid Life Media, said the incursion by an entity calling itself “the Impact Group” was “not an act of hacktivism, it is an act of criminality. It is an illegal action against the individual members of AshleyMadison.com, as well as any freethinking people who choose to engage in fully lawful online activities. The criminal, or criminals, involved in this act have appointed themselves as the moral judge, juror, and executioner, seeing fit to impose a personal notion of virtue on all of society. We will not sit idly by and allow these thieves to force their personal ideology on citizens around the world.”

While the wisdom of signing up for a website to have an adulterous affair is questionable at best, using a government email address to do so seems doubly foolish. The Hill reported that some 15,000 email addresses registered on the site came from government or military domains.

No matter, the incident is turning up lots of government email addresses — and it looks like New York State government as well as a number of municipal governments are no exceptions.

Pastebin, which stores text and web coding scripts, includes a list that breaks out out some of the Ashley Madison clients not individually but by government email domains.

The Pastebin list — which, of course, can only be confirmed as genuine by Ashley Madison — includes a handful of New York State agencies and authorities, plus a number of municipal domains. Here’s the list of domains with “ny.gov” in the address, followed by the number of accounts listed on the Pastebin list.

nyserda.ny.gov 1 nystate.gov 1 nypa.gov 3 omh.ny.gov 2 cornwallny.gov 1 labor.ny.gov 1 mail.nysed.gov 1 omig.ny.gov 1 opwdd.ny.gov 1 panyny.gov 1 (Port Authority) tax.ny.gov 1 thruway.ny.gov 1 townofislip-ny.gov 1

Update: A few more from the list that use “ny.gov” or “nyc.gov”:

most employers require a signed statement banning the visitation of sites not related to the job, especially this type of crap.
I am sure local and state are the same.
Will all these people be fired.....great for a turnover in jobs?

Most businesses will have the IT departments block these types of sites and monitor what their employees are looking at while on their dime.

Cheating is like lying: if you don’t do it, you don’t have to remember what you said/did.

Pretty dumb to use an email address that identifies the name of the user for a website like that,

email accounts are free.

And disposable. I never use even remotely correct demographic data on setups. I know the variations if I have to reset stuff. I use them for various technical, old vehicle, and the like sign ups and newsletters. Cuts down on the spam.

Same here, I never use my real name for my email addresses

FIOS gave me a free account with my name in the address , so I dont use it.

Plus, I know people who were upset that they lost their accounts when they switched cable providers,.
