ATLANTA — A family is recovering after a violent home invasion. The father has a metal rod in his leg and is expected to be OK.
Whitney Lash says a group of teens burst through the front door of her Sumter Street home in northwest Atlanta Sunday.
She made a terrifying 911 call made just moments after the home invasion.
"There’s a black young man at the front door. He just pulled a gun on my husband."
The group, who tried to rob the family, shot Mike Lash in the leg and then fired at Whitney Lash as she ran with her baby in her arms.
"Our investigators are continuing to gather information,” said Atlanta Police spokesman Officer Ralph Woolfolk. “At this point, we have gathered fragments as well as bullets and sent those off to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for analysis.
Police released a sketch Wednesday afternoon of one of the suspects they are looking for in the case.
The incident has many in the neighborhood on edge. Those fears were the focus of a community meeting Tuesday night at Fire Station 28 on Hollywood Road, not far from where the attack happened.
“It is scary when you're not used to it," Don Penovi told Channel 2’s Carl Willis. "We're kind of in a transition area. We get stuff like this, but they get it in Buckhead. They get it everywhere."
Neighbors told Willis they were glad there was a big turnout for the meeting.
"What I really liked, I don't know if it was what I heard, but I thought I saw, it was a really well attended meeting," Penovi said. "We've got to have continued pressure on the police to come out here."
On a GoFundMe page set up to help the family, Whitney Lash wrote, in part:
"Mike's words are still echoing in my mind as he was bleeding profusely and in excruciating pain on our floor. The amazing police and EMT were working on him while he was proclaiming Luke 23:34 'Forgive them Father, they know not what they have done.’ His immediate grace and forgiveness for others in the midst of life and death is a constant reminder for me as I feel anger trying to creep in.”
Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in this case.

I can't help wondering how OK the guy is going to be with a permanent metal rod in his leg. I guess it's better than having to have his leg amputated.
The quote from the neighbor "they have it everywhere." is total BS The risk might be everywhere, but the probability increases with your proximity to section 8 housing and black neighborhoods.
And finally there is a gofundme site for people who want to help with the victim's medical bills inasmuch as he is unemployed. But I noticed that one of the other articles on this stated that the family just gotten back from vacation - not related to the shooting, but what the heck were they doing going on vacation while he was unemoployed?
Can you say for certain that it wasn't planned prior to the shooting? Kind of a petty thing to go after a shooting victim for.

What isn’t mentioned in the news is the wife’s report that up to 15 thugs swarmed the house after her husband was shot. They intended to ransack tghe house like the “demonstrators” did to the Ferguson and Baltimore businesses She fled out the back door with her baby with an armed thug in pursuit.
For folks not near Atlanta, find a street address from a crime report like this and look up the property value, complete with property taxes paid annually. Not only are they paying thousands of dollars in taxes, thy can not send their kids to the public cesspool schools if they want their kids educated. The local private schools often cost more than 10,000 dollars PER YEAR for each student.

Well, a lot of us have been in his employment situation. Specifically, employed in one job with health coverage and that job comes to an end. It happens all the time to folks through no fault of their own. I have been in similar situations where, not having taken time off from work (e.g., vacation) for a long time took the family on a trip to see family before beginning a new job. Fortunately, I never suffered a home invasion and wounding at the hand of YUTES during those periods where I didn’t have health insurance. This is clearly not a family of slackers...so give them some understanding and thank God that you are not in their shoes.
If it were me, after the hospital stay and rehab I’d be out looking for the thugs because we know the police are not going to find them.
One moral to this story, DO NOT open the door to any group of blacks on your door step no matter what their problem claimed is. Get away from the door and if they burst in, fire continuously.
My mom had this happen from a white bum. She was having coffee with a few neighborhood gals, all in the 70s, when some bum tried to kick in her door. My mom, good soul she was, said I thought he may have been lost or something so I did not shoot him. Luckily he was not able to get in and the police apprehended him. I told her “mom, you have gun, don’t wait for me to come pick up the pieces”. Fortunately the repair costs come in under a grand.

I beg to differ on that first. They’re right across the rail yard from Carver Homes and Hollowell Parkway, which was renamed from Bankhead Highway because it had such a bad reputation.
I read this when it first came out yesterday!
The sweet looking WHITE couple had just returned from vacation.....the father was due to start a new job.....they must have recently moved into the house because there appears to be a realtor sign outside, also a sign that says ‘crimefree’
They accosted the dad at his door on some flimsy excuse.....the dad wouldn’t let them in....so they shot him in BOTH knees.
The parents must have already taken their young son upstairs....he was already asleep
The mother ran and grabbed her second child, a baby, and ran to the back of the house and called 911
She was pursued and she ran out of the house with one of the thugs shooting at her
She begged him to not shoot her baby......he took her cellphone

It sounds like the police went "out there" when they were called - which is what they are supposed to do. Does Mr. Penovi think the government should issue a personal police officer to every citizen?
Does getting shot somehow give the guy immunity for being criticized for making dumb decisions?
Forty years ago I knew people who wanted to move to Atlanta. You couldn’t get me to live there now if you paid me.
