Why Ben Carson Is Unexpectedly Surging Ahead

Second place in Iowa. Top three nationally. No, it's not Jeb Bush or Scott Walker -- it's Ben Carson.

The neurosurgeon, who has never held elected office, is emerging from the middle tier as a top contender after the first Republican debate.

Carson, the only black candidate in the 2016 presidential field, is polling at 12 percent in a national Fox News poll out Sunday and 14 percent in a CNN Iowa poll out last week -- good enough for second place in the GOP field behind only Donald Trump. Carson is in third place in a national CNN poll out Tuesday.

So, what's behind Carson's rise to the top tier?

The candidate is not the most eloquent in the Republican field, nor does he have the most experience or money. But in a campaign that has so far revolved around Donald Trump, Ben Carson brings to the table much of what Trump is - a Washington outsider, not a politician, authentic and genuine -- without the bombast and spectacle.

Dr. Carson has a GREAT life story, and he’s hated for it.

Does he have up to a billion dollars to spend on his own campaign?

If you listened to Carson in the debate, he understands the foreign policy issues and makes sense.

Because he’s not a politician! The people may have finally awakened to just how poorly served (not served at all) they’ve been by the politicians.

Every day my opiniobn of this Dr. Ben increasingly leans toward greater respect. I am reading his life story, what a giant, how drastic the contrast to DREAMS of MY FATHER. A true hero. Thumbs up, and I’ll be on his bandwagon for sure.

Everybody who is not a politician is surging. The voters have had it with the all talk no action. I could care less who sounds the slickest in the debates. Its just talk.

Dr Ben said he has know DT for some time “He just another guy in the ......area!”
He further said the private T is not like the public persona. He’s one of the most considerate , thoughtful ,generous men he knows.
The same type of description was echoed by Alice Cooper who was celebrating his 40 wedding anniversary and 30 years of sobriety. He is often in the Trump foursome and as a born again. Christian is spreading the word through his rock music now
If one is judged by the people one keeps T seems to have some very loyal friends

Perhaps Carson can finally help improve the lives of the African American community as a role model.

Obama squandered the opportunity. The mantra: “your life sucks because of white persons” has failed. Sharpton and Jackson have not helped. Our high schools are still a pipeline to prison for young black men, more than ever.

A new era where black role models are the likes of Ben Carson and Clarence Thomas may be upon us.

Oy vey, another one with shaky beliefs for life. Thanks for the heads up.
"I would never advocate it’s illegal for a person to get an abortion," the doctor said at the time [1992]. "I think in the long run we do a lot of harm when we bludgeon people." -Ben Carson
Strange choice of words for the doctor to use, no?

Not to take anything away from Carson, but I think the media will puff up anyone to distract from Trump. Kasich, Fiorina, even Rick Perry. Do not confuse Carson’s likability and very real accomplishments as translating into him a viable presidential candidate. Ten years from now, if he keeps it up, maybe.

Trump and Cruz in that order. I have heard Jeb Bush, John Kasich, Mike Huckabee, Rick Perry, Marco Rubio etc talk, talk, talk for years. There is nothing new that can come out of their mouths. None of them can win a general election and if they did they would effect zero change in Washington DC.

Yes my whole family is all in for Trump. Hoping he takes Teddy along for the ride as shotgun.

One of the potentially invaluable results of the candidacies of "outsider nonpoliticians" Trump and Carson and yes Fiorina, may be the dawning realization that Government is not rocket science, that career pols like Bush etc don't know anything much of substance that the average bright attentive adult doesn't know, or can't learn in a hurry. How much more capable than the parvenu Obama are savvy smart executives with real world experience who don't have to look over their shoulders every step to make sure they didn't offend some voter bloc or donor.

A lot of doctors are pro-choice, and besides, he may have changed his views in the intervening 23 years since that quote was uttered. What has he said lately about the subject?
