Drug-resistant head lice are very likely coming to a school near you, U.S. investigators warn.
At least 25 states host lice populations that don't respond to common over-the-counter treatments, a new analysis reveals.
Permethrin, part of the pyrethroid class of insecticides, has long been the go-to weapon against head lice, mosquitoes, bedbugs and other insects.
But continued exposure to permethrin has caused a huge swath of the dreaded insects to develop genetic mutations that render such drugs useless.
"It's a very classic resistance story.

Head lice, which can't jump or fly, transmit by direct physical contact. They quickly infest the neck and head, feeding on blood and attaching their eggs to the base of hair shafts.

In 25 states -- including Arizona, California, the Carolinas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Texas and Virginia -- lice have what Yoon calls "knock-down resistant mutations" -- a triple whammy of genetic alterations that render them immune to over-the-counter permethrin treatments.
Lice in four states -- New Jersey, New Mexico, New York and Oregon -- have developed partial resistance, the researchers found.

On a more humorous note, I'm very, very happy about the job I have today. Because checking for pesticide-resistant lice, would not be any fun at all. Makes me itch just thinking about it.
Unlike the outbreaks of childhood communicable diseases we have seen which, are due to (mainly) white American loony tooners (including those who claim to be conservative), this is due to the huge level of illegal immigration.
When I was young, we used to kid each other about having cooties. No one actually had any, since there probably wasn’t a single cootie north of the Río Tijuana. Looks like things have changed.

Fortunately, it’s an ailment which can be resolved by intense fine combing. Services are springing up to do so, a bit pricy but very effective with properly trained staff - akin to just getting one’s hair done. Just scrape them buggers out and kill ‘em in bug-lethal chemicals.

Hmm.. As I recall, when a kid, if you got lice (boys at least), your parents just shaved your head and they’d leave on their own within a couple days, maybe buy some special shampoo. That was about it.

Yeah. It would. Lice make the rounds every year in the little enclave I live in. If it's coming from illegals, then the lice have learned to drive Acuras.
