Food labeling, Hollywood-style
The Washington Times ^ | August 17, 2015 | Joanna Lidback

The first clue that Gwyneth Paltrow didn’t know what she was talking about on Capitol Hill earlier this month came with the first words she spoke: “I’m here as a mother.”

Apparently, the actress thinks that any mom can show up in Washington and hold a press conference that attracts lawmakers and the media.

Memo to Ms. Paltrow: The rest of us moms don’t have that celebrity power. We haven’t won Oscar awards, assumed glamorous roles in the “Iron Man” movies, or married (let alone divorced) rock stars.

But Ms. Paltrow has done all of these things so, of course, everyone needs to know what she thinks about pending legislation on food-packaging labels. You know, because she’s a regular mom.

Well, I’m a mom and a farmer — so I like to think that I know a little bit about raising kids, crops and dairy cows. And I’m convinced that Ms. Paltrow is completely wrong about food.

She has let herself become a tool for special-interest groups that oppose the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act, which the House passed in July with significant bipartisan support. This sensible bill would prevent states from forcing food producers to put costly and ineffective labels on food that contains genetically modified (GM) ingredients.

“I have the right to know what’s in the food that I feed my family,” said Ms. Paltrow.

True enough; no one is arguing that you don’t have the “right,” except, of course, the group she represented that day in Washington. That’s why packages of food already display information about calories, nutrients and ingredients. Anybody who wants to avoid GM foods enjoys a few good options, including organic food, which doesn’t contain GM ingredients and already carries a special label.

I thought she lived in London. Shouldn’t she be talking to Cameron?

The elites worry about their food being organic, the welfare leeches get obese and need treatment for diabetes all on the taxpayer dime, and the shrinking middle class just keeps trying to pay the bills.

Love you Gwyneth -- but you never seem to know what you're talking about.

Q: How long have we been genetically altering our food? A: Longer than you think.

Genetic modification is not novel. Humans have been altering the genetic makeup of plants for millennia, keeping seeds from the best crops and planting them in following years, breeding and crossbreeding varieties to make them taste sweeter, grow bigger, last longer. In this way we've transformed the wild tomato, Lycopersicon, from a fruit the size of a marble to today's giant, juicy beefsteaks. From a weedy plant called teosinte with an "ear" barely an inch long has come our foot-long (0.3-meter-long) ears of sweet white and yellow corn. In just the past few decades plant breeders have used traditional techniques to produce varieties of wheat and rice plants with higher grain yields. They have also created hundreds of new crop variants using irradiation and mutagenic chemicals.

Silly cow, the simple fact that we can do it easier now does not erase history!

I don’t usually give a hoot about celebrity’s appearances, but for someone who normally has a minimum of class (wardrobe-wise, I mean) by Hollyweird standards, she is wearing one tacky dress. I’d expect to see that on, say, Pamela Anderson, if it was cut lower. Paltrow is too much the J Crew type to pull that off, if anyone could.

Speaking on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Paltrow said that the world could see “her ass hanging out” of the Antonio Berardi dress.

She admitted: “I had kind of a disaster. I was doing a show and I changed there and I went and I couldn’t wear underwear.

“Well, let’s just say everyone went scrambling for a razor... I went from being the most beautiful to the most humiliated. In one day.”

Does she mean the dress she’s wearing in the picture in this thread? It’s not just the sheerness, it’s that weird satin shield-looking thing up the front, the dress just looks weird and not chic, like when these designers try too hard. Why aren’t there any good, at-ease, pulled together American designers like there were in the Seventies, Halston, Von Furstenburg’s little wrap dress, etc?

She lives in Kali, somewhere. Remember how she ticked off all her neighbors by having a BHO-in-person fundraiser? The neighbor was basically put on lock-down, and movements were extremely restricted by the Secret Service.

Got to go pickup your young offspring from where ever? Guess again...

Oh, I guess she moved from London. She was married to a Brit. I looked at her cookbook and said “Pa-toowee! No bland Waspy dreck for me!” So why should I listen to anything she says about food? She hasn’t a clue.

The first clue that Gwyneth Paltrow didn’t know what she was talking about ...

Didn't she say "rocks talked to her while hiking"? And not "talking" for firm grips and footing, either...

And the "conscious uncoupling".

Oh, and IIRC, her attempt at being Julia Child/Martha Stewart/JI Rodale included some pretty expensive stuff for everyday meals.

She’s a sweetheart. She just needs to find an old, fat conservative guy of meager means — to be her husband.
