Julian Bond, a charismatic figure of the 1960s civil rights movement, a lightning rod of the anti-Vietnam War campaign and a lifelong champion of equal rights for minorities, notably as chairman of the N.A.A.C.P., died on Saturday night in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. He was 75.
He died after a brief illness, the Southern Poverty Law Center said in a statement Sunday morning.
Mr. Bond was one of the original leaders of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee while he was a student at Morehouse College in Atlanta. He was the committee’s communications director for five years and deftly guided the national news media toward stories of violence and discrimination as the committee challenged legal segregation in the South’s public facilities.
He gradually moved from the militancy of the student group to the top leadership of the establishmentarian N.A.A.C.P. Along the way, Mr. Bond was a writer, poet, television commentator, lecturer and college teacher, and a persistent opponent of the stubborn remnants of white supremacy. . .

I heard him speak at Kent State back in the 70s. He came across as calm and measured — but darned if I can remember a thing he said.

What a shame.
He was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1965 , but was denied his seat in the legislature by his colleagues. Eventually courts ruled that he was duly elected and should be seated. It may have been a shock to Jim Crow era Georgia that a Negro was elected to.public office.

Whenever I read something about Julian Bond in the last 20 years, or saw him on TV, he always seemed very bitter and angry. Julian, like Harry Belafonte , Donald Glover, and Eric Holder has remained stuck in the 60’s attitudes of us against them.
I always thought his anger somewhat ironic, considering that as a young man, he was a rather light skinned black person, and thus reaped the asthetic benefits of not looking or sounding ‘fully’ black. I suspect Julian Bond had a lot in common with Louis Farakhan, he of the Black Muslims.

At least he died knowing that he made an extremely positive mark on race relations and left the world a better place (extreme sarcasm)
