Can We Recalibrate? (Red State)
RedState ^ | August 14,2014 | By: Erick Erickson (Diary)

I want to beat Hillary Clinton next year. I want to beat her with a Republican who is not just another party apparatchik surrounded by lower level party apparatchiks within the Republican Party.

But I know we cannot beat Hillary Clinton with this level of anger. We won’t be able to draw people to our side and our cause like this.

I get the anger. I do. I am angry at the betrayal and the repeated lies from Washington Republicans who say they love children, but won’t even defund Planned Parenthood.

I get the anger of voters who sent men and women to Washington to fight Obama only to give him a blank check and keep Obamacare funded.

But I don’t get this anger. If this is the anger that flows out of Trump supporters, I do not think it is sustainable. Yet it comes daily. It is poisonous to debate, to democracy, and to the soul itself.

Yes, Republican voters have been betrayed. But I do not think people who are angered at the present President demeaning the integrity of the Presidency will ultimately side with any candidate whose base of support generates rage and hate. I refuse to believe that the people angry at Washington and the GOP have let their anger consume them. But the people in these emails and so many like them have been consumed by anger.

Those of you who see it within the ranks of the candidate you support, and not just with Trump supporters, need to try to channel the anger and draw out the happy warriors.

Conservatives must be happy warriors. Those of faith already know they’re on the winning team and the issues are far larger than the day to day politics of this country.

I don’t think they are “waving the white flag”. The argument is that Trump can’t win the general election and frankly, it is a good argument based on the polling.

The fact that he would even invite Jeb to a conservative gathering proves that EE is an establishment hack and is just more of the problem.

It’s possible.
But at this point in the 2008 election cycle, Caliph Baraq had been fundraising and campaigning for 7 months.

Time grows short, I believe.

I only scanned this since I don’t really care what this idiot has to offer. It seems to have embedded within it an attempt to stereotype all Trump supporters with the vulgarity he posted and an attempt to try to justify his betrayal.

To EE, NOT the poster:

If this is the anger that flows out of Trump supporters, I do not think it is sustainable.

The primaries are six months away, if it is not sustainable, things should be okay by then. Disinviting people is one way to keeps the fires stoked.

The "I get it" stuff is condescending. I support Cruz and I don't trust Donald Trump, but his supporters deserve more respect than that. Those who don't like Trump's operation will have to come up with something more resourceful and creative than "stomp on it".

You and George Will ought to re-read your Federalist #10. It explicitly keeps the boundaries wide, so everyone can play.

You address the Trump supporters as them, but when the dust settles it has to be "us".

Telling Trump supporters to not be so hateful and to be more positive is in itself hateful and negative by the standards you describe.

Now go attack Obama and his ilk, and leave Trump supporters alone until you can be more than a scold.

A while back CNN hired him to speak for Conservatives....because he supposedly a “nice” one.....as a result his “debates” on that channel were not debates at all.

Eric, It took nearly 40% of us to get THIS PISSED OFF to get you ANGRY?? Please go away and do your SELF-PROMOTION on Aljezeera!

I’ve posted this around the net a number of times and do so again inasmuch as THIS is a constantly recurring problem and some may not grasp how widespread it is. And now that the RNC has OPENLY declared war on the Tea Party, it should be clear to all why I have for a few decades cautioned my many friends to NOT SEND THE RNC – or ANY NATIONAL GOP OPERATION BASED WITHIN 100 MILES OF D.C. – A NICKLE.

Over the years – when, to steal a line from Billy Joel, I wore a younger man’s clothes – I was involved with several pretty solid conservative candidates for Congress. One was a Democrat (Lawrence Patton McDonald) – because that was the only way he could win in that district. Those old-timers who know Larry’s record will tell you that he was a solid an anti-communist America Firster and more Republican than the Pubbies in nearby districts at the time. (His mother’s cousin was General George Patton from whom he got the middle name – and his incredible resolve and love of this country.) How ironic that he, like General Patton, was also assassinated by the communists they both despised. It was my honor to introduce Larry at his last public speech in the district before that ill-fated KAL007 flight!

Those other candidates ran as Republicans and each had to pass my rigid litmus test or I went looking for someone who did. For that reason, I hooked up with what the TRADITIONAL country club Pubbie establishment types believed were too radical for their refined tastes. I served as treasurer for several and in other capacities for more.

As those campaigns began to unfold and it became clear to the country clubbers that these guys 1) had a shot and 2) were pretty independent thinkers who would be hard to keep on the reservation once they got sworn in, the local Pubbies communicated that information to the Republican National HQ types who rather quickly sent in campaign “professionals” ostensibly to lock up the impending victory.

Instead, in nearly every case to which I was privy, these “professionals” proceeded to TORPEDO our guy’s campaign in subtle but effective ways.

From that experience I can tell you that the Pubbies at the HQ in D.C. would rather have a Democrat win a given district than have a pubbie up there who would embarrass them by refusing to follow the party line.

If YOU become involved in campaigns for solidly conservative, America and Constitution loving, hard-nosed, independent thinking candidates in 2014 and beyond – and I pray many of you do — please DO NOT trust any of those folks from GOP HQ in Washington. If they want to send you no-strings cash for your campaign, take it. If, however, they “suggest” sending in one of their “professionals,” tell them to fuggetaboutit.

They ARE WHO GOT US INTO THIS MESS AND THEY ARE NOT YOUR FRIENDS!!!!

“The common and continual mischief of the spirit of Party is
sufficient to make it the interest and duty of a wise people to
discourage and restrain it.” G. Washington

(BTW, My genealogical research informs me that my 5th great-grandfather, one John Carpenter, was one of George Washington’s Virginia neighbors and fought with GW in the French and Indian War and the Revolution. Prior to that, John traveled with GW during his survey of the Northwest Territories.)
