Last weekend I had the pleasure of attending the annual conservative RedState Gathering, where nine Republican presidential candidates gave fiery speeches. Although all were very impressive speakers, I kept applying the “Buckley rule” — these days, generally thought of as “nominate the most conservative candidate who is electable” — and did not feel confident that any of them could actually win the White House in 2016.

There is no doubt that establishment Rino, Kasich will A) put most people to sleep, B) be unwatchable like his Fox show, and C) lose the election in a landslide.

Trump or Cruz will need Kasich to stump for them in Ohio. Notice Kasich is another one who didn’t diss Donald, and I have to give him kudos for that.

I agree with the conclusion that Cruz will have a hard time winning, but disagree that it's because he's too conservative.

As I've argued here for a couple of months, we have seen a sea change in the political process. It's NOT about ideology (mainly) anymore. It's about celebrity.

This is why I think Trump absolutely understands how to ride this wave. It's incredible: he has TEN TIMES the Twitter followers of Bush, more than the next six candidates put together. He ADDS more followers in a week than Bush (or Cruz) even has.

Trump, the richest guy in the race, has so far managed to run a national campaign in which he leads for more than two months and has spent nary a dime of his own money. He's done it all with social media, expanded out to national media coverage. He dominates broadcast, radio, Twitter, FB, and so on. In short, his appeal to people who never vote or wouldn't consider voting---like Obama's in 08---is of geometrically higher proportions than any other candidate.

That's why I think (and so far, evidence from "the street" seems to back me up) that harping on how Trump "isn't conservative" on this or that issue are utterly meaningless. He's on a whole different field, and traditional conservatives are left in the dust.

Check out my previous post. We have seen that he believes, rightly or wrongly, that there are millions of hidden conservative votes out there. He is going after them.

I don’t know if he is right or not.

But at least he has a plan that is different from trying to appease the producers of The Today Show, which is what Kasich/McCain/Romney/Bush 41 thought was so genius.

I think it may well be the case that it is impossible to elect even a moderate conservative as President.

If that is true, then we should nominate a true conservative b/c at least we get the word out....perhaps sprinkling a little hope around for a future after Ragnarok.

What we really need is what we don’t have....a conservative celebrity.

A conservative Trump.

Or a celebrity-like Cruz.

I do think that is spot on. I’m also afraid it underscores the magnitude of the problem.....alas

Yes, it is a problem---maybe. If you go back to the election of 1828, when Andrew Jackson came in, it was hailed as the victory of the "common man." "King caucus" was dead and elections forever changed. But the country didn't disintegrate. In fact, over the next three administrations, we grew significantly.

Lincoln's election is harder to judge because it occurred during war. No telling without the war how much the Republican revolution of 1860 would have accomplished. But I think any historian would agree that at minimum slavery's expansion into the territories would have been finally stopped---that in itself would have been a significant change.

The third revolution of this type occurred with TR. Remember, they deliberately put TR in the vice-presidency so that they'd never have to deal with him? He was far left on economic matters, far right on nationalism, and above all loved America. Now, Trump is no TR, but he does have some of the same characteristics. He is more pro business, more low-tax, probably about the same---given the era---on "social issues." But in terms of wanting a great US, he's 180 degrees opposite Obama and Hillary.
