Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz has dropped out of the 2016 governor's race.
Ritz announced Friday afternoon that she will instead seek re-election for her current position.
"The best use of my time and talents will be to serve our children, their families and the taxpayers of Indiana as superintendent of public instruction," Ritz said in a written statement. "I must continue to be 110-percent engaged in supporting public education."
Ritz badly trailed former Indiana House Speaker John Gregg in collecting campaign donations in their race to represent the Democratic Party against incumbent Gov. Mike Pence, a Republican.
As of June 30, Ritz had about $112,000 in total campaign funds, far behind the $1.8 million Gregg had in the bank as he seeks a rematch of his 2012 campaign loss to Pence.
“Glenda Ritz has always put the best interests of our school children first and this decision is another example of that," Gregg said Friday in a written statement. "I look forward to supporting her re-election to the office of superintendent and to working with her as governor to further strengthen public education in our state.”

If I lived in Indiana I would forever remember the cave on religious freedom from Governor Mike Pence earlier this year.
Pence caved under corporate elite pressure on legislation to protect gay marriage objectors like bakers and florists who have come under attack in other states.
Who is the real conservative who will oppose Pence next year in the GOP primary?

Yes, but I supect the IN Republican primary voters are so uninformed that they do not even know about the Pence cave-in.
Yes, he caved. That doesn’t mean he isn’t a conservative. There isn’t ANYONE who is 100% conservative because the concept of conservatism (or any other ideology) is different for everyone. Even Reagan wasn’t 100% conservative to someone.
Pence is perceived as vulnerable by many rank and file Republicans. He has not governed nearly as effectively as his predecessor, Mitch Daniels. The Religious Freedom Act was a PR catastrophe. There is an uneasy feeling with Pence that no one is in charge of the ship and important matters are being neglected. He may actually be doing a good job but perception is reality in politics and he is not all that well perceived.

We live 1 city over from Carmel. They have a better system because the parents are actively involved. They also pay far less per pupil because the students do not destroy the textbooks and equipment.

Thankfully you do not live in Indiana. You would rather a democrat win than reelect a good Republican who did not do exactly as you would have done on one subject.
Hopefully, you are just a basement poster and don’t infect the activists in the state you do live in.

An educator should understand that there is no 110%; she’s, therefore, only qualified to be an “undereducator.”
I think its pretty obvious at the end of the day that both major parties are moving us in the same direction.
That’s what we see in Washington on issue after issue including the constant increasing of our national debt ceiling when Obama, Boehner and McConnell all get together to drive the nation deeper into debt.
To live in the notion that there are major differences between the major parties is to live in a fantasy world.
Its the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights of the Constitution of the United States that Governor Pence caved on.
Rationalizations and excuses don’t work for me on this. I have heard so many in the last 40 years of my life from Republican politicians on issues ranging from the size of government to higher taxes (federal, state and local) to the size of our national debt.
Bottom line is that both parties follow the lead of corporate elites.
Nigel Farage, leader of the United Kingdom Independence Party. spoke at CPAC earlier this year of a corporatist political system in his country involving the collusion of big banks, big business and big government.
I think the same situation exists in this country as well.
