I wouldn’t be surprised if he left so he didn’t have to accept having an angry token boss; once merit was tossed aside for race/gender a lot of Anglos were put in untenable positions. If they had leverage they were OK, but if they were in situations where results weren’t critical (any government work, including the military) they were screwed.
