8 ways Ted Cruz could be the scariest debater on the Republican stage
The Week ^ | 8/5/15 | Staff

While Donald Trump and Jeb Bush elbow for their space in the limelight Thursday night, Ted Cruz's Princeton classmates warn that it would be remiss to count him out just yet. Here are eight ways Cruz could steal the show in Cleveland. Jeva Lange

1. He's sneaky. "Nobody was better at setting traps," Austan D. Goolsbee, a Yale debater who later became a leading economist for President Obama, said.

2. He's captivating. "He knew how to hold a room," recalled Stephen Wunker, who was a year ahead of Cruz on the debate team.

3. He's driven. "He seemed to be the presumptive winner," said Ted Niblock, a Johns Hopkins University debater in Cruz's year who now works as the general counsel for a clean energy startup. "This was on top of his frequent tournament victories, which were earned in the most grinding, methodical, joyless way possible. This might be my biggest problem with him: He took all the fun out of it. He prepared and prepared, came to the tournament on the weekend, executed his plan, and then went back to Princeton to take the fun out of something else."

4. He's in his element. "In that environment, he was cool, spectacular, a god," Raj Vinnakota, a Princeton debater who knew Cruz and who is now the CEO of the SEED Foundation in Washington, D.C., said.

5. He's an all-star on the stage. "He was Michael Jordan in a game where I mostly sat on the bench," wrote Sacha Zimmerman.

6. He knows how to manipulate emotions. "It's not visual. It's not: Look at me. It's: Listen to me. No, believe me. No, follow me," said Dae Levine, a Columbia debater now working as a communications strategist.

7. He's unnerving. "I remember him as a scary, driven machine who fought a protracted, bloody land war for total victory," Niblock said.

8. He's been doing this forever. He was a "fully-formed political animal" even in college, said Bob Ewing, a Princeton debate team leader.

He could be. And I like him a lot. But its time for him to give the finger to the NWO thing. H1B and Fast Track for TPP were big errors. And I don’t see him correcting them.

“Ted Cruz is the only one who will drive the McConnells, and Hatchs and Mccains and Boehner’s from power– and he will transform the GOP back to a limited gov’t party. “

And that should be all that matters, not the nitpicking by a select few that use ONE article to get their ‘facts’ from.

I don’t know who I am looking forward to hearing most tonight - Cruz’s brilliance on conservatism or Trump’s taking on the establishment candidates who are shaking in their boots right now.

It would be an absolute GIFT to Ted Cruz, if Rubio and Bush and the GOP-E come after Donald tonight.

Cruz will come to Donald’s defense, he’ll “Cruzify” them!

I pray them come after Donald for Cruz’s sake- but I doubt even the Gope is that idiotic.

Good point about him taking on his own party.

As far as the debate...tonight is NOT a debate. It’s a bunch of mini-monologues. No real back and forth of substance.

I’m torn between Walker and Cruz...everyone else doesn’t have a chance for my vote (except Trump...that would be fun just to piss off the Washington elites).

Cruz screwed up with TPP. He was looking at how he could use that power as President. Walker has been a bit wishy washy on immigration.

Cruz will take on the GOPe. Walker will take on the liberals and win.

“I wonder if Cruz and Trump have made a non-aggression pact.”

I would think so, if even an unspoken agreement. I’ve seen nothing but admiration spoken for the other. It will be neat to see if there is any chemistry/coordination between the two of them tonight. Kinda like lions going for a hunt ;)

If he backtracks the press will slam him for it, relentlessly. And ignore anything the RINOs and other liberals do. I’m watching to see if he changes his tune on those issues without coming out with a complete repentance.

“He took all the fun out of it.”

Maybe it’s not so much fun if you’re on the opposing side. :)

By all accounts, Cruz is a star. Will the Republicans be savvy enough to see that?

Why, I have been told Cruz is a dimwit wimp with no charisma.
Are you sure of these findings?

:)

You won’t find Cruz on Twitter yelling about kicking someone’s a##.

It’s getting to be time for the adults to take over.

The winner will be the one who’s most effective at slapping down the inquisitors and the false premises behind everyone of their questions.
*********
Not necessarily— that was the winning ticket last time around. So, one can bet, each candidate will have canned remarks at the ready to do just what you suggest.

The winner will be the one who finds the “new” way to arouse the audience.

I was very impressed by Cruz in a recent event regarding the Iran deal that was held on the Capital steps in Washington, DC.

When Cruz starts to speak, a group of Code Pink far-left loons, armed with their own PA system, starts interrupting the event. Cruz goes full jujitsu -- politely invites the Code Pinkos to his microphone, allows them to speak, and then hands them their asses with his superior rhetorical skills, grounded in logic and facts.

I hope Ted and the Donald are working together. That being, said, there is no need for a mini-pact with Cruz. He has not criticized anyone yet and I don’t expect him to.

I think this debate may be a disappointment in that it isn’t a debate, but I will watch with interest.

On at 4 PM here in Maui.

Exactly. Technique doesn’t make a master debater (though, ahem, it may make a difference in other kinds of baters). The knowledge comes first and that’s why Ted is scary. He knows what he is talking about, damn the technique.

Can you put that to music?
