Remembering Ted Cruz, Scary Debate God

One question left to be answered in tonight's Republican debate: Will any of the candidates be able to best Trump, the master of mangled, mercurial, and captivating oratory, in the competitive sport of bombastic speechifying? People who remember Ted Cruz's collegiate debating career told National Journal that the Texas senator might be the most qualified. One former debater told the NJ writer — who also debated against Cruz in college — that "he was cool, spectacular, a god." Another said, "I remember him as a scary, driven machine who fought a protracted, bloody land war for total victory," which may or may not have been meant to be hyperbole.

"We don't intend to turn the Republican Party over to the traitors in the battle just ended. Turning the Party over to the so-called moderates wouldn’t make any sense at all." -- President Ronald Reagan

Wonder if the media is setting him up to “fail”, that is, unless he wipes the floor with everybody, they will claim he was “dissapointing”....

Really looking forward to having Cruz and Trump dominate the debate, while all the mealy-mouth RINOs have their thumbs up their @sses. :-)

Getting kind of tired seeing the word “bombastic” in articles about Trump. I cannot remember the last time I saw that word prior to Trumpmania. So for you Trump writers out there here are some synonyms to keep your writing from being repetitive and dull....

pompous, blustering, turgid, verbose, orotund, high-flown, high-sounding, overwrought, pretentious, ostentatious, grandiloquent;

My favorite of those is orotund, but grandiloquent rocks too.

He won’t fail. Everything I’ve heard about his debate skill reinforces what this article says. Alan Dershowitz claims Cruz was one of the most brilliant students he has ever had. As far as I can see, Cruz is in a league of his own.

I really like Ted Cruz, but he may have to be a VP candidate to someone due to the general public’s ignorance over what makes a politician and what makes a statesman. We’ll see. If he has to team up with Trump to get his hat in the ring, so be it.

“Another said, “I remember him as a scary, driven machine who fought a protracted, bloody land war for total victory.”

That wasn’t intended as a compliment but it describes just what we need in a candidate to win the Presidency in 2016.

CRUZ or lose!

I don’t see either man wanting to be VP. That office isn’t worth a bucket of warm spit, unless the President dies. How much has Joe Biden done in his official capacity? Very little, just a token presence.

Isn’t the VP the “President” of the Senate? I wonder what Ted Cruz would do with that title?

If Cruz is Trump's running mate and Trump wins 2016, Cruz *will* be the next President after Trump. I look forward to Cruz punishing Chelsea Clinton in 2024.

“Chelsea Clinton in 2024”

If the spawn of Hildabeast is on the 2024 ticket, the voters of this country are beyond help.

Good list. Grandiloquent is the only one I hadn’t seen before, I’ll have to look it up.

OK general comments, not directed at any one person...

I’m hoping I can watch tonight, I’m expecting Cruz to make quivering pools of jello of everyone but Trump, he can probably beat Trump in a debate since he was supposed to be national debate champion at one time, but probably won’t try to make anyone look bad. Just debate them right out of the room...he’s extremely intelligent, thinks quick and comes to the table with a head full of facts.

Trump will probably do fairly well, he’s no idiot, but has already admitted he is not a debater. Should be interesting. I just hope I get to watch, but with a family full of foaming at the mouth Democrats I can’t tell them what I’m watching...lol I’ll be elsewhere though so should be no problem, unless they decide to take off somewhere for dinner tonight...

My mother hates it if I even mention Trump, she calls him “a horrible man” and says sometimes I really scare her. Then again she refuses to admit Obama’s economic policy is the reason our economy is in the toilet right now...basically refuses to admit any Democrat has ever done anything wrong, and has the mainstream news to back her up...yeah right...but she hates Hillary...go figure...

What scares me is the ides that low info voters in hordes might wander to the polls like zombies and we’ll end up with either Jeb, Hillary or Bernie...it’s not a possibility I can rule out just yet...

My sister is a union electrician, 134% Democrat, has a bumper sticker reading “The road to hell is paved with Republicans” on her truck. ‘Nuff said...

So I never even mention politics, it just results in endless rants about how horrible Republicans are, how they are all about helping the rich and how Cruz is “the most dangerous person in this country”. They still insist he shut the government down, no matter how many times i tell them it was Harry Reid who blocked the vote on the budget bill. Cruz never had a chance to debate it much less vote on it and shut down the government. But CNN and NBC both say Cruz did it so it’s carved in stone...

Anyway I digress...back on topic.

I think Cruz will probably come out on top, most likely without ruffling Trump’s feathers, and since Perry is not in the main debate, I’m not sure if anyone will have the guts to go into attack mode. Trump is the wild card, I’m not sure how it will work between him and Trump in the debate situation...

As the race continues though, I think the mest matchup would be Trump/Cruz, the VP chair would be excellent on the job training for Cruz for next time, and I think he needs it, I don’t think he’s really ready for the top job yet. I think he could do it, and probably do well, but I’d like to see him VP first, then he’d be the best bet for prez you ever saw.

"He won’t fail"

You dont understand, these aren't real "debates", these are just shows, entertainment, Gotcha vehicles. I dont trust the media, not even Fux news.

Do you think they can “trap” Cruz with gotcha tactics? I don’t. He’s a skilled and intelligent orator/debater. People may not like what he says, but the panel moderators aren’t going to be able to damage him.

Senator Cruz has been mentioned for VP, AG, and Supreme Court. Any position other than President would be a waste.

I just worry that presidential debates are typically not true forensic debates and therefore the skills are different - nowadays a debate is someone throwing a bunch of gotcha questions one way and sappy question another with no real debate of substance or even questions that allow for it.

It may or may not have been BS.

All successful debaters look like that to outsiders.

Twenty years later, it's easy to say that another competitor was driven and intense and forget that one was that way oneself.

Cruz did GREAT!

He got a lot of applause. He had really good answers to the questions.

In fact, I thought all of the candidates did very well.

I really liked Dr. Carson’s final statement: (paraphrase) I’m the only one here who has separated twins; I’m the only one here who has done brain surgery on an baby still in the womb; and I forget the rest .. but those statements really surprised me. I knew he did brain surgery (especially on children).

I would love for him to expound more on the “still in the womb” surgery. Especially with all the Planned Parenthood stuff going on.

Anyway .. most of it was interesting .. learned something about each person .. and my favorite Ted Cruz. He’s still my number one.
